Porn and Video Games: a Good Mix?

Contributor: <3BF <3BF
Do you think it's possible to successfully bridge the gap between these two mediums? Would you play a porn video game if it was well designed tasteful, and fun to play? Something like 'Gorgasm: The Legend of Dong Slayer' from 30 rock? link

There actually are already "porn" video games. Anything rated AO (Adults Only) is likely rated that way because it has explicit sex in it. I've seen online or otherwise (I honestly can't remember) two AO video games like this. One was a tentacle-based game and the other one, surprisingly, focused on a man instead of a woman. These games, I assume, are hard to find since they're not sold in regular stores. They're probably only online.

If we're talking non-console (a.k.a. PC), then there are already TONS of "porn" games. SchoolMate is a game where you, a male student, has sex with different girls as school, sometimes two at once. Rapelay is a game where a man breaks and rapes a woman and her two daughters. Seriously. That one is heavy, apparently. You can even get the women pregnant and force them to have an abortion. If you don't, they kill you by pushing you in front of a train or something. I don't know.

Anyway, the ones that exist aren't likely tasteful. Especially the ones I just described, obviously. But there might exist better ones? I'm pretty sure all the ones I listed are Japanese (the last two are for sure) so that probably has something to do with it. It'd be interesting to see a tasteful "porn" video game.

There have been only a handful of games out of the thousands that the ESRB has rate that have received an AO rating, only one that that has a permanent AO rating has been offical released for a console platform. link and in most cases the "explicated sex" content is a far from porn let alone enough to make the game a "porn" game. For example Indgio Prophecy's "AO" content is incredible tame and the game as a whole can hardily be called a porn game.

As you said the rest of your examples are Japanese only. There is hardly TONS of porn games available. Compare how much porn is on this site available for purchase alone to the amount of "porn" games available for commercial purchase, if you want to see how small the amount of porn games really is. The amount of porn games drop a even more if we only count "hardcore" games. As far a commercially released console games there exist zero hardcore porn games for consoles. "Porn" games are a small niche the button line remains the same "porn" as genre doesn't exist in video games the way it does in photographic, print or film media.

Regardless if they have been released in America or on a console or not, there DOES exist "tons" of porn games. I could show you websites upon websites upon websites where you can purchase these games. I didn't realize we were only referring to A. console-based games and B. games released in our own country. That seemed very egocentric (the second part) and I didn't want to focus on only one portion of the world. The reason I didn't realize the console part is obvious. It wasn't stated. So actually, it's not part of the discussion, anyway. But I digress.

Yes, if we are ONLY talking about console games and we are ONLY talking about American-released games, there are essentially no porn games. This is a shame and it should be changed. I do agree with this. I don't really see WHY there aren't porn video games when we have it in other medias. Maybe because some people are still stupid enough to believe video games are only for children. Personally, I get annoyed at kids in my game store but that's just me. Lol. Obviously I know that games with supposed "explicated sex" aren't really so. I own, have played, and beaten Indigo Prophecy and Heavy Rain. The latter of which was worse than the first but it still wasn't bad (just a few instances of butt shots and a boob shot which can be skipped). I play a ton of video games and I know that there is never anything really bad in them. I know they can't ever really be considered porn, even when Kratos is having sex with two women utilizing a minigame system. The worst that ever happens is you see some boobs and then it pans away for some sexual noises. It really is all very tame.

I'm not simply referring the US when I say this there isn't a ton of porn games in existence. In Australia for example games can't receive the highest rating and are thus "porn" games are de facto banned link for example. You won't find much porn games in the European markets either. That their exist many porn games in a single market (mainly the Japanese market, do any of those site you mention have only UK made porn games for example?) is in fact "focusing one portion of the world". Japan is really the only place adult games exist as a genre. The important part of the my previous post was the word compare, if your looking at the gaming market globally and as a whole, ya there isn't a ton of porn games. Across three continents (North America, Europe, and Austria) the rate of anything that could reasonably be called "porn" in commercial games is rare. It all depends how you define the word "ton", there may be ton with in a certain market but as a whole it a region specific niche.

And I disagree discussion of the console platform is very much relevant consoles make up as much as 75% of the gaming market. And more importantly that console make up the majority of the game market is a reason why there are so little porn games (again looking at the media as a whole not focusing on any single sub market) licensing arguments for example.

If we are talking about the majority of the world and the majority of the gaming market there is in effect no porn genre in gaming.

I honestly didn't know about the Australia/UK/etc. thing. I live in the US and that's mostly all the knowledge I have. I can't speak for what I don't know. If we're talking worldwide, there aren't "tons". But I do know of a lot of Japanese games that can be in English to begin with or have been fan-translated into English. So all English-speaking people can play them and that was really all I was basing it on. And I didn't mean that it's not "important" or whatever that they're not on a console. I simply meant the discussion didn't appear to be limited to console games because there was no mention of platform. That's all.
