I've only been to one so far but I'm planning on going to more over the summer. I recommend going to a TNG (the new generation = 18-35 year olds) if you're in that age range because I find it a lot easier to talk to strangers who look like they're around my age. If your area doesn't have a special TNG one, it's not the end of the world. My first munch was a general one and there were a handful out of 20 or so people there that I considered in my age group. The guy I talked to the most that night almost turned into a relationship but he didn't have enough time to commit to another person (he's poly). To find munches, I think the easiest way is to join Fetlife and do an area search for events/groups.

I have been to three munches and a play party in my home state (Louisiana). I have been to one "littles" munch, a littles party, and a BDSM club when I was in Los Angeles, as well as a woman's munch in San Diego.

My experiences in Louisiana have been absolutely horrible. The play party was the best, but even there I was touched non-consensually without the permission of my top/protector (My Master had sent me with a protector because he could not be there).

My local munch (Lafayette) was very cut off and rude to me. Although I attended with a member of the community who is well-known and well-liked, they were not welcoming at all.

I attended another in Baton Rouge, and nobody but 2 older men showed up. They mocked my orientation and made me feel uncomfortable/unsafe.

I attended a third in a city closer to Texas which was the best of the three, but even there I was put on verbal restriction by a man I didn't know and was not my top.

HOWEVER, in California, this was NOT my experience at all. Everyone was friendly, kind, and supportive. At the woman's munch they were fun, nonjudgmental and very informative. At the BDSM club in Los Angeles, people were very kind and because I was new, after scenes they would talk to me about the toys they used and what stimulation is caused. At the toy booth they let me hold toys and gave me demos (not sexually, of course) of how the toys worked. The littles munch and get together was fun, and everyone was friendly and nonjudgmental.

So from my experience, if you live in an area with a big community or in a more liberal area, it is tons of fun. But if you're from a conservative area, be cautious, as people are very fond of their privacy and tend to be rude and clique-ish.
