Researching BDSM

Contributor: wrecklesswords wrecklesswords
Hello my fellow Edenites!

So, I am doing a project with a friend and she has commissioned me to write an introduction to a photobook about bondage and BDSM for her. I'm not finding sources online that I really trust so I'm coming to a source that I trust.

Mostly, I'm looking for a good history of the culture; when it started, how, popularity change throughout time. I'm writing a basic introduction to the subject and a bit about the history, someone else is handling the relationship side of it because s/he knows a lot more about that than I do.

No, it's not for school. My friend is doing a personal project of a photobook about bondage.

Does anyone have any information to share with me on this?

Look up Leatherati and the Leather archives. You will learn a ton about culture. This is not the place for you to learn about the BDSM community given that it is a sex toy shop not geared toward people of that type.

Yeah, this isn't really a place to learn about BDSM. Hm.. I'm not overly sure what to tell you on where to start though. Most of the stuff I learned from actual people, not books.

Agreed. Learning about it from an outside perspective is sub-par to experiencing it firsthand.

Well, really, I was looking for people who DID know where to look. I know this isn't the place to learn about it since it's not really geared toward that culture. Because I knew that I could probably find some people on here with the knowledge that I'm looking for.

Thank you for the help, though! It's definitely a start.

I would say to find a local group to learn from. Go to munches and such, because it's honestly the best way to learn. Some would recommend fetlife.com (I wouldn't anymore, though there are still good people there). They have info and groups and it's free.

I realize it has been a while since your initial post and this may no longer be relevant to you or your friend. That being said, there are different types of bondage, and each one would have its own history and start dates. I'd pick one or two you want to focus on and start there. See what types interest you or what types your friend is looking to create a book on. Books can be helpful, if you can find the right ones, several hours with a few good google searches can be helpful, and if you're able to - you could attend a conference or munch depending on the availability of such things in your area and your own comfort with them.

Don't worry about the comment(s) telling you not to ask your BDSM related questions here. If you have sexual questions, Eden's is a good place to ask for suggestions. Unfortunately, there isn't a lot of activity in our forums these days, so you may not get many answers, and as with anywhere else, not all the answers will be good ones.
