It's better to warm up with fingers, plugs or probes. A harnessed dildo isn't as easy to manipulate delicately, and you're also more likely to be anxious when it's the "first time being pegged," which leads to a tense anus. Have plenty of foreplay (but don't orgasm!), then back off for the insertion (playing with the penis often causes the anus to contract), then do what feels good.

Like Scott said - starting with fingers and toys are best - otherwise I think you risk damage. I'm typically not ready for anything too large until I can adjust to my wife using 2 fingers for a while - I think she's actually getting into it as well!

A snug fit is best, because it gives you the most control and prevents the dildo from twisting around (if you have a curved dildo for prostate stimulation you want to have it stay in place). The O-ring should be at the dildo's maximum size, or very near since rubber will stretch a bit.

In practice, though, you can have an O-ring that's up to about 1/2" in diameter bigger than the dildo, provided your dildo has a sturdy base that's wide enough. It will flop around more and rotate during use, but it will work.

I always insert a plug into my boyfriend an hour or two before we plan on pegging. having the plug inserted and then walking around and sitting keeps him excited and makes him anxious for more!

Lots of warm up, especially for first timers! I think it's one thing to please yourself anally, but when you bring your partner into it, lots of psychological things can come up that weren't expected, let along the process of learning to share a behavior that is pleasurable but can hurt if not done correctly. Patience is the key, especially when experience has yet to be achieved.

Even today, as someone accustomed to being pegged from time to time, we start out slowly with lots of lube, a finger or two and more lube. Then I tell her when I am ready. Slow and steady wins the race.
