We don't do the public thing much (unless you count the occasional party or event? in which case we occasionally bring out the gear), but I'm going to do a sociology project in a few days that will experiment with people's reactions to S/M in a public sphere

Master is horrified at the idea of any public acknowledgement of our non-mainstream relationship. I wouldn't mind wearing a non-descript black collar, though; I do have a black velvet choker which would do in a pinch. Nobody bats an eye at that.

Wearing a set of handcuffs in the belt loops of my jeans always works for me. Not to sure if that counts as "subtle" but it makes me happy.

I don't mind toeing the line without being explicit. I'll wear a collar or cuffs out in public, particularly if we're on our way to a BDSM event, but happen to go by vanillas between car and the event.
kinda the only time I wouldn't, is around my grandparents or certain aunts and uncles.
Otherwise, I'd wear a collar, have my wife on a leash, as long as we weren't explicit, I don't really care.

Neither of us would be comfortable doing anything obvious.

I made a cbt toy out of parachute cord years ago. It's about 12" long, with a 1" diameter steel ring in the middle (for attachment). It's very effective for tying cock and/or balls--and it easily converts to a necklace when not in use.

My wife has "made me" wear it in public many, many times. It just looks like a black cord necklace with a silver ring pendant--but we both get a little thrill from other people seeing the cord she uses to tie up my manhood!
