I'd say cuffs and ankle restraints to reduce chafing and make them easier to remove/loosen if they become uncomforable (cuffs would have to be either padded, or leather though, don't know if the wife would want naked steel cuffs).

Being tied up is a form of foreplay for me. The fact that the person is taking their time to do it properly and are focusing on my comfort with it at the same time will get me in the mood and squirming with anticipation before they are even done

I don't have too much experience with either, and everything I've done/had done to me with rope has been nothing a boy scout couldn't do. But the potential of rope is really great- competence is a huge turn-on for me, so I would love to be bound by someone with a lot of rope skill. Maybe some day.

I like rope because it's versatile. All you really need to know is basic safety (where not to put pressure) and how to tie a square knot. I can end up doing ties fairly quickly. But it's more function over form, and hardly looks as nice as those shibari models tend to.
Cuffs + rope can give you more options while still being pretty quick as well, since you don't need to worry as much when attaching the rope to a cuff rather than directly on the skin.
