I'd have to agree. Maybe there should be an "opt-in" option for new people to get this. Otherwise, a "Newbies Come Here" kinda button that leads them to a page full of information and tutorials they can reference whenever they like would be unmatched in usefulness.

Well, my original idea was that when someone creates an account, they would get a pop-up with the option to be contacted by a Big brother/sister. So it would be optional. I'm sure that's something that could be arranged to not feel invasive on some.

Maybe it could be a link or button at the bottom of the registration page, something that says "Join the community! - As an optional welcome to the community, you can be connected with a welcome committee partner who can help guide you through use of the site"

Or there could be an opt out thing. People who wouldn't be comfortable with that sort of thing could just opt out immediately and be presented with the Join The Community Guide and people who don't opt out can be greeted personally and stuff.

No, I think your feelings are totally valid. I can totally see that (I have a very introverted friend, so I know) Most wouldn't even know if the member was necessarily "prominent" I'm like on the 5th page of reviewers in the community page... it's not like anyone would know who I am...

But I think that most... MOST... people like to know they're not invisible. I think it's really hard for the newbies to feel like they belong unless they jump right into the forums and do things "just right" for certain community members' preferences.
