Mm... I don't know whether this is up your alley or JR's, but I was thinking it might be worth doing to put together a "welcome to being a mentor" tutorial, and suggest that mentors mention forum parties and clubs and things.

I know when I first joined, it was a lot of the one-on-one stuff that got me really interested.I mean, I found the cooking club just by happenstance, but then once I was going to the Cooks meetings, Alys invited me to the Eden Lit meetings, too.

I think having a little page on encouraging mentors to encourage their students to get involved would be a good idea. Not mandatory or anything, obviously, (for mentors nor for students) but just mention it.

That's a great idea. I know I'm debating on being a mentor and am too scared to sign up to do so.

Like a welcome wagon kind of thing?

Any update about updating information on the webpages and/or creating FAQ pages?

I think that's a great idea, and tutorials aren't terribly difficult to put together either. What kinds of specifics would you like to see on a page that was sort of a tutorial for how to be a mentor?

I try to message all of my students about meetings/activities on the forums. Unfortunately, very few partake so far.

You mean out of my super cool star wars traveling mug. Why yes, yes I can. I just got it recently though, so I have to start doing it. Ive been too busy to paint. My goal for next year is to get back to painting one every 2 weeks. I need to buckle down again.

I don't know. In a way it would be nice to have someone be a greeter (I used to do that on another forum) - but also - just someone to be there and encourage folks to stick around.

When I first posted, I don't know if I would have been back if RedBoxBaby hadn't reached out to me privately and pulled me in and shared areas of the forum, etc.

I think we get a lot of folks who visit but don't return because they don't feel welcome or it takes too long to understand all the parts of the site and review program, etc.

I have nothing to share about that as of yet unfortunately. I will bring it up again at my next meeting and see if I can get some feedback for you.

I read on another post about there being mistakes on some of the corset pages - for Coquette( at least those were the ones I saw) where is said that they had metal boning when they did not. Who would we tell to have that fixed?

I think a part about dont just publish the review should be included. I think getting feedback and working with a mentor is what helps and I dont think many mentors do that. Antipova is the perfect mentor, she is really good at communicating and helping you to improve instead of ok publish, publish, publish, graduate.

I think it would be less of a tutorial and more of a suggested ideas for mentors? The program currently allows mentors freedom to work with a student any way they like. I think we need to be careful and not necessarily standardize the program, not that I think that's what you're suggesting.

And about what Starkiller says - Antipova is an awesome editor - haven't had her as a mentor but wow. She's great.

I think a group of people doing the welcome wagon thing would be great. Would there be a way to get an email or something when new people sign up? I would volunteer for that.

Of course I think there should be something like that for editors too - I keep seeming some doozies and sending them to Sammi (I think that is who I send them to) because of multiple errors - like the editor never even read through it.

For anything like that, you can submit a support ticket and it will get to our product people who can then change the page.

I think some people just do it for the points and really dont read through them. Just hit publish.

There is a "welcome wagon" idea in the works. The original idea was a big brother/sister program for all new contributors.

I guess I keep mentioning the greeter thing cause I used to do it and I loved connecting with new folks and being able to help them find their way around.

Eventually someone else took that over because I was a senior moderator and needed more in another area - but I guess that is where my heart is and I wish there was some way we could get a greeter program going.

No I totally see what you're saying, and how my wording came across that way. I picked "tutorial" for lack of a better word really. Some guidelines with suggestions and ideas, that's more what I'm talking about.

TexasMama is too scared she'd keep other people from finding their own voice....or try to make them TM2 or something.

Its why I keep going back and forth on it.

I guess too what I'm trying to say is that I wish there was some place where the moderators or whatever could say "We could use help here" (volunteer or whatever) so that folks would know how they could help.

I think greeting people is possible without there being a program for it. A lot of people see someone new and leave them a message and reach out to make them comfortable just because they are nice and want to help out. I think youve been doing a great job just reaching out without it being a program, so Id say just keep it up. There are others out there like you who do the same thing, I really think it helps.
