Do you think we should be able to nominate Eden admins as well? (Private Voting)

XxXxX XxXxX
I have seen Eden admins go above and beyond their "job discription" many times. I found out when I tried to nominate a staff member that it wasn't possible. Do you think we should be able to nominate Eden staff for Contributor of the Month as well?
Answers (private voting - your screen name will NOT appear in the results):
Yes. They are members of our community as well.

While I wouldn't mind being able to nominate them, I don't think my boyfriend would want me dominating them.

LOL I was wondering what was that about, until I came to the poll. Yes I think we should be able too.

I say no. I agree when companies don't allow staff to be part of any sort of contest/vote because these things are enough of a popularity contest as they are without everyone just autovoting for their favorite admin.

I've noticed that enough of the contests around here are less about the quality of the things being voted for and more and who is more known/has more friends stumble by and vote for them.

Shoving admins/staff into the mix just adds another layer of complication to that.

I see both points. But the staff are great, and so very helpful! The community wouldn't be what it is if it wasn't for them! xoxo

Interesting point. But in defense, a person is only allowed to be contributor of the month 1 time in a 12 month period. We would run out of staff before then.

I also must say that this is the most outspoken community I have even been a part of and though some people may vote for popularity. Not everyone does. Most of us are here because there is no judgement and you can say and vote how you wish.

Regardless of if we can nominate them or not. Whether people vote for popularity or not isn't going to change. Its all done with private voting anyway.

Most of the staff play the role of contributors as well and do it very well. Sometimes they even go out of their way to be helpful or just make someone smile on a bad day. They should be rewarded as well.

I think we should be able to nominate them. The staff are simply amazing.

I agree with you that with or without the staff people voting based off of popularity is going to happen anyways.

My point was that having admins/staff thrown into the mix just adds a whole layer of complication that is both unfair and unnecessary.

Think of this hypothetical:
A new contest pops up (it doesn't matter what for) and while scanning through the names of the entries, you see that JR, Stormy and the remainder of people you've likely never heard of are entered.

The mob mentality of any community in a situation like this is simply that they WANT to support the people they know the best. That's two people that the bulk of the community likes and have probably had dealings with here on EF against people whose names you've never seen before in your life. The simple psychology of it that that people naturally lend their help that they feel the most connection for.

Do I think it's fair that EF staff do a lot of really awesome work don't don't get to participate in fun things like that? Of course not...But the alternative appeals to me even less.

Maybe what we could suggest is a separate contest/thread for how a particular staff member went above and beyond their job description and helped you out. For every separate helpful occasion, the staff member gets a point and whoever has the most points at the end of the year gets Staff Member of the Year.

The staff are wonderful but I would see it as too much of a popularity contest if we could nominate them for contests. The only way I think this would be ok was if the staff had a separate contest.

Thank you, everyone. I think it's fantastic how the community wants to reward the staff, but the truth is our rewards come in the form of seeing the community work together and stand up for each other while maintaining the enthusiasm for reviewing and making Eden awesome. When there's a great day in the community and there's a lot of positive energy flowing, that is our reward.

We very much appreciate the kind words and support of the community, but would rather honor the thousands of community members who often deserve more recognition than they get on a regular basis.

(On a much lighter note, an admin's default status should be "awesome". There shouldn't be anything we do that's considered above and beyond, it should just always be that way.)

I still think that there should be a highlight for the staff members each month. Maybe a thread started each month where we all get to say how we feel about the particular staff member. Not so much questions, but lifting them up, because the staff here is amazing (you are amazing Stormy!) and deserve to be lifted up from the incredible joy they all do! Each month would be a different staff member. No contest, just a thread each month for one of our awesome higher ups!

I also understand both points of view but if an admin goes above and beyond then they should be recognized too

I think this is a great idea. Many companies have a way for customers to give positive feedback about staff. Even if you do not win, it is always wonderful to know that your efforts are recognized.

Here's the thing - I've admined on several forums, and it's a pretty lonely job. Yes, it's an admin's job to be nice to us, but I firmly believe they should at least be entitled to the same respect, camaraderie, and recognition that other members are given. Because even as an admin, they are still a member, and should have the same chance to enjoy the site as the rest of us even outside their work.

Just my 2 cents. Go Stormy!

I do agree that many of the admins do a great job and put forth an admirable effort towards the site and community. This should be something taken into consideration and recognized of course. I do think they should be awarded, however I think it should be separate from the polls on community members. Of course the admins are part of the community, but they should have their own contest or commendations/awards so that it remains fair for the community as a whole. I do think everyone should still vote and be included though, just keep things straightforward so everyone is happy.
