The sponsoring requires the community to donate, and with 5 families (I think?) last year, I think the later families lost out a bit because it was draining. I'm not sure the community could support both at the same time. I'd rather pick ... more
you are probably right, toys for tots might be the better option then, since you can buy something at the dollar store and throw it into the box

I think it should be one or the other. As much as I want to adopt families and give needy kids things they need, I think that having fundraisers for adopted families and toys for tots is going to be just a tad bit overwhelming.
If the adoptive family was done more around thanksgiving and the toys done for xmas, would it still be a lot? I know they are both right around the corner so its probably a moved question...just thinking

I know for me adding in that extra toy at the store when shopping for my son isn't a huge problem, it doesn't have to be a top of the line electronic fancy toy to help out TFT's

Anyone know if Toys for Tots accept monetary contributions? That way people could either buy a toy and wrap it the traditional way or donate points for cash.

They're far enough away that we might be able to plan something like that out.

What would everybody else think of adopting families for Thanksgiving and doing Toys for Tots for Christmastime?

Very true and sometimes, well most of the times, I end up donating every time I shop during that time

That I don't know off the top of my head. A little bit of research would be required.

Alternatively, we could have someone sponsor a local TFTs, much like the adopt a family campaign last year. We raise money, send the sponsor a check, and they buy a ton of toys for their local chapter.

they also take paypal, for those who want to donate that way

I think that would be fine, as long as the Thanksgiving event ended at Thanksgiving and didn't drag into December. Also, if it were smaller, maybe just 2-3 families or so.

That's another great idea.

That would be the plan, since it doesn't seem to make sense to do Thanksgiving dinners in December lol.

I just popped over while waiting for the photography meeting to start. Hope that's okay. Looks like you are discussing donating to toys for tots?

I've already brought up my concerns with doing something like that. IMO, we need to be careful about overwhelming the community with drive after drive after drive.

Any thought about naming it something other than Thanksgiving since not everyone is American?

That's perfectly fine, everybody is welcome to attend every meeting

Right now we're deciding what other fundraisers we might want to do this year.

I do agree with you. How would you do it differently? (asking for help )

Something to do with harvest time might work.

I have to admit that I'm not that into charities. I tend to suspect that the organizers get more benefit from it than the supposed beneficiaries. However, I do like Heifer International. I did some research and they do seem like they really help the communities they get involved in.

I know that with last year's we weren't able to sponsor any that weren't in America. We can call it another Holiday Family, but it would still have Thanksgiving in the title most likely.

I like the idea of feeding people, but I like the idea of teaching people how to feed themselves better. The old "teach a man to fish" sort of thing.

Perhaps moving the adoptive families fundraiser to late October/early November to coincide with harvest time might be a way to go. You know, even with a bounty of food, there are always some who still can't afford to fill their tables.

On that note I do have a question as I am new to the community. At the beginning of the year is there ever a brainstorming session to go over possible months of the year the community would like to target to do fundraising. Nothing fleshed out like in these meetings but some type of outline?

Although that is indeed noble (and something I agree with), it's simply impossible for some people (i.e., those who live in the inner city, those who live in apartments, etc.).

So far it has been ongoing, with no overall plan.
