iTap questions

I have a question about the iTap.

Why does it need rubber compatible lube (assuming it's the velvet qoute...but why)? What would happen with oil based lube?

It has something to do with polymers. I'd ask my brother the chemist, except that would be awkward.

iTap's Velvet Cote contains at least some rubber, I believe (it's also known as Rubber Cote). Rubber is oil-based, and in chemistry, "like dissolves like". So silicone and water based lubes will be fine with Velvet Cote, but oil-based lube will likely degrade the material, just like it would weaken condoms.

Hi Folks...the new iTap Vibes are not Rubber-Cote...they are what we call Velvet-Cote which is not rubber at all. Velvet Cote is our trademarked name we designated for PU Cote, which is a polyurethane, a man made polymer in varying degrees of hardness and softness. This is a Safe and Pure (phthalate free) material that is best used with a water based lubricant or California Exotic Novelties brand Universal Adult Toy Lubricant. This "coating" on the iTap Vibes gives the item a "velvety smooth" feel which we have had a tremendous amount of success with. I hope this answers everyone's questions and concerns!

Actually, you didn't touch on oil lube compatibility or lack there-of.

I knew it wasn't rubber, I am just curious as to what happens with a lubricant that is not rubber compatible. I love the velvet cote...it feels great and cleans well. I guess it's just the curiosity I have at the moment.

What would happen with an oil based lube...would it damage the velvet-cote? It's all I can assume since plastic is compatible. And if it would, how severe would the damage be? I would test it, but I like my velvet-cote toys and don't plan on purposely ruining them...plus, I have no oil based lubes.

Plus, I would like to add it to my review just as a heads up.

My guess is that a polymer in velvet cote can react with one or more polymers that may or may not be found in any specific oil based lube. Warning against them all is more efficient than attempting to acquire a chemical analysis of of every oil-based product on the market, including ones from the future.

Also, polymers aren't limited to rubber -- I could type a whole bunch, thus possibly curing my insomnia, or just drop a link, go back to bed, and watch cartoons. I think I'll go with the link thing: link

Or I could reply to myself and simplify -- long chemical chains equal large number of variables for possible reactions. Better safe than sorry when it comes to introducing multiple long chemical chains to each other.

Thanks for the info!

Any updates about interactions between the Velvet Cote and oil-based lubes?

Our best answer, since there are so many lubes on the market, all with different ingredients, is to stick with a water based lube to ensure long life and best results with Velvet-Cote. I agree with the ToyGeek...better safe than sorry!
