The Smell of Sil-a-Gel

Sir Sir
I've had my Radiant Gems harness for almost a year now, and the Sil-a-Gel dildo that comes with it still smells absolutely disgusting. Is there anything that I could do to make the smell go away?

I'm actually very unhappy because I had it on the same shelf as some of my leather things, and they don't smell like good leather anymore. I'm extremely angry about that, because those have been in my family for over twenty-five years, and they've had that leather scent up until now.

How come 200 dollar cologne does not linger as long as sila gel. ????

I keep all my sila gel separately wrapped in bounty paper towels in their own airtight container in their own plastic drawer, just like sovineer nuclear reactor waste from Chernobyl plant.

HAHAHA!!! That was a good one.

Yeah, I agree. I wish that my cologne lasted that long (though my older sister would probably end up murdering me).

Thank you for the advice. I just rearranged my entire sex-toy collection after posting that because I was sick of it. You think that baking soda would take the smell away (not on it, but around the paper towel)?

I thought it was supposed to be decent? I know someone on twitter the other day was saying it was a great idea because it's antibacterial. I don't know enough about it to say if that true though.

Hm, no, it isn't. Some people describe it as a "sweet" smell, but in reality, it's sweet in the sense that it's a disgusting smell. And antibacterial? I don't believe so, I might be wrong.

Personally, I wouldn't buy another product made of it. Ever.

I think it smells a bit like urinal cake. Yep, stinks. My one sil-a-gel piece does not get to play with my other toys.

I believe the sweet smell is because many of the Sil A Gel toys are scented. It did not help. LOL

HAHA!!! I don't believe that mine is, though, that's why I don't understand. I'm not sure what to do with it. Right now, it's sitting in my bathroom in a bag.

Sir, if it's causing you that many problems, I would just throw the thing away.

Well, I didn't want to do that because it's really wasteful. I'm not sure how I could throw it away to recycle it or something.

Hey Guys,

I just wanted to let everyone know that Sil-A-Gel is an ingredient that we add to all of our PVC material during the manufacturing stage. It is not a material unto itself. It is anti-bacterial, cadmium and latex free and utilizes ingredients that are on the FDA Safe Ingredient List....that is where the SIL stands for. This was not meant to trick anybody into thinking that this was a silicone product. If you have a product that really smells terrible, we are very sorry. The smell of rubber can be off putting to some people, but it shouldn't be worse than that. At the end of the day these are rubber based products. If you have any questions for me, pls do not hesitate to ask. Thanks, Chad

That's really cool, thanks for clearing that up - I did indeed think the "sil" meant silicone.

I assume its a trade secret what it is exactly, but I gotta ask, just in case you are able to share more. What is it? Barring that...what's the purpose - just the antibacterial property, or does it soften PVC?

I could probably ask a million questions so I'll stop it there.

Thanks!

Well, that didn't exactly answer my original question. I wanted to know what I could do to have it not smell any longer. I've washed it multiple times, and it still hasn't gone done one bit.

Thanks to Chad for the information! I've had the same smell issue with several PVC products, and Sir, I hate to say it, but I've found nothing that makes that smell go away. Sometimes it's not as bad, but just when I think it's fading, it's back.

I just recently got a new toy with a PVC piece on it and to my knowledge, there is no Sil-A-Gel in it, but it's got the smell. I can't smell it unless I put my nose to the surface of the toy, unlike some toys that have been in closed drawers and still managed to stink up my entire room!

My advice is to keep it in an airtight container, away from everything else or, as Mischa's Amusements suggested, bury it in the yard!

Alright! I am contemplating digging it a grave. Maybe then it will stop smelling bad. Perhaps I should turn this into an experiment and add it to my review...

I apologize again for posting on my partner's account. This is really going to start getting confusing.

Baking soda is good at absorbing smells and lifting certain kinds of stains from leather. This link (link) has some methods for removing odors from leather. They were intended for things like old leather jackets, but there's no reason why they shouldn't work on your leathers.

... all the more reason to replace your toys with real silicone. I'm glad to see that DJ is finally coming out with their Platinum silicone line, and Tantus has already been doing this for years. As far as the couple of sil-a-gel things I have, I keep them in their original plastic packaging when not in use, and that keeps the scent tamed for the most part.

... and I just checked the package that my DJ sil-a-gel Anal Twist came in, and it claims that it's "odorless" - that's just patently false, and we all know it.

We appreciate all of the feedback on Sil-a-Gel. To clarify, Sil-a-Gel is an antibacterial additive that can be added to any material (Silicone, PVC, TPR, TPE, etc.) Sil-a-Gel itself is odorless, hence the Sil-a-Gel box on the packaging that states (All new Sil-a-Gel formula, Anti-bacterial non-toxic formula, latex-free, cadmium free, odorless). We understand that the statements on the package about Sil-a-gel may have been mistaken as a description of the actual product as whole. We are now in the process of revising the Sil-a-Gel box to remove the word "odorless" on our PVC items. Yes, PVC by nature has an odor. Letting the item air out does make the odor a little less intense. Unfortunatly, the odor cannot be washed off or soaked out. For odorless toys, Silicone, glass or hard plastic is your best bet. TPR and TPE toys also can be found that have a mild scent to odorless. Hope this helps.

I just bought a sil-a-gel toy and it smelled really bad for about a day and a half, but after letting it air out in an open room the smell is almost completely gone.
Since I really like the type of sensations sil-a-gel toys can give, I don't mind putting up with the smell that's left.

I had a few sil-a-gel items in the past. A lot of my first toys were that.

Here is a trick...they retain smells...I used fragranced lubes like those in the Intimate Organics line and it changed the smell to be more pleasant. That's really all you can do. No amount of washing helps

If the "anti-bacterial" chemical is embedded in the toy during manufacturing, I can't see that it would be possible to totally eradicate the smell.

From what I have learned, toys that smell usually have something to hide, like phtalates, plastic, vinyl and softeners and are often not body friendly at all.

We've gotten rid of all our toys that stink (literally) and no longer buy vinyl, rubber and absolutely no latex or soft jelly rubber. (We have one HARD jelly toy that has no odor and I actually though it was acrylic. Evidently there is no softeners in it, so we have kept it and us it occasionally.) Wasteful? Maybe, but if it prevents illness or cancer or gagging on the smell, I'm not going to keep and use a dangerous toy, just to "prevent waste." My body is NOT a land fill and I try to treat it with respect. Toys that stink don't respect my body, so out they go.

And WHY would the prefix "SIL" be included in the name of an ingredient if there is NO silicone in it? I don't like that at all.

Rebecca Weinberg Rebecca Weinberg
Just to clarify, Sil-a-Gel is Doc Johnson's name for our antibacterial formula that we add to all kinds of materials here in the US. It's a small percentage of the toy. The "Sil" in Sil-a-gel has nothing to do with Silicone.

Sil-a-gel itself has no smell. It is the material that Sil-a-gel is added to that may or may not have a smell. It is simply an added bonus to purchasing Doc Johnson items that are made in the US as it enable the material itself to fight bacteria left behind.

It is completly up to the consumer if they want a PVC toy that naturally will have an odor or to choose a Silicone, TPR, or TPE toy that has no odor. Because of the different price points of these materials, PVC is usually the more popular item as it is more affordable. We recognize the demand for scent free toys, hence our recent release of our Platinum Silicone line in all of our best selling shapes.

Phthalates- We are now a non-phthalate facility, meaning all of our Made in the USA materials including PVC, TPE, TPE and Silicone are non-phthalate.
