Canadian EF Users... Is there any way to avoid custom charges. They are a B!

Ehhh. I don't like to think of the brokerage fees, but Eden has such a great selection and I love the community, so I'd rather not order from somewhere else anymore.
My last order (just over $100, two items plus free toy wipes) had a fee of $57.60. That was a shocker, but it could have been much worse, it seems.
I shudder to think what it will be this time, as I availed of the Black Friday sale and splurged on five items (at $127.45) plus a free t-shirt.

At the same time, I did receive an item for review without any charges, though it was only priced at about $24.00. Let's see where it goes this time, I guess. I'm prepared to pay the fees, but would rather not. I like that Eden offers to reimburse, but I'd feel bad if they lost out on profit because of a shipping technicality.

I'm *thisclose* to telling Purolator/UPS to take the package and either a)send it back to EF or b)shove it up their collective asses because they are being absolute bastards about the simplest things.

For example, I told the driver on Friday that I was not prepared to pay the COD charges at that time, so he said fine, they'd do another delivery attempt today. Later on Friday, I called UPS and asked them to hold the package at the nearest depot so that I could pick it up myself rather than have the drivers make delivery attempts when I may not even be at home. Fine and dandy; I got an email an hour later confirming that my package would be held at the depot for pickup.

Cue this morning, when I met the delivery guy in my driveway when I was on my way out. I asked him what he was doing there and he was like, "Oh, I'm making another delivery attempt! And there's some COD charges on this one." And I said, "...Yeah. I made arrangements with UPS on Saturday to have this package held at the depot so that I could pick it up myself."

I can guarantee you one thing...if they make a third delivery attempt tomorrow when I specifically requested that the damn package should be held at the damn depot, I am going to be slightly less than pleased. I mean, hello, how difficult is it to follow instructions?

UPS sucks. Badly.

Basically the same thing happened to me. They decided they didn't want to hold it at the UPS store, so by the third attempt, they forced a cheque out of my hands.

There's so many different options for shipping to Canada, I don't know why they are not being considered.

I got charged when it was sent with UPS standard as well.

Looking at my receipts right now from UPS and there are brokerage fees on the 3 I have here that were Expedited.
No matter the method of shipment, your packages would eventually get flagged. It sucks... I know.

Yeah same here. There's no community like this anywhere that I can find. I splurged on Black Friday also. I spent just over $200, and I don't even want to see the taxes. I hope my box is magically invisible until it gets here.

Wow! I'd no idea crappy UPS did this! I don't like that. Seems so wrong. I hate that it happened to ya. I'm in the US, but I'll tell ya, I ship orders to customers all over the US and UPS has been very popular here for totally vandalizing and even stealing packages! I had to go through heck to get that even looked into by someone. They were rude! I finally said, look lady, I have photos of my own damaged and torn apart packages and my customers have plenty of proof. She quickly turned kind and said she'd see to it that nothing ever happened again. Unfortunately, it did... 6 more times! I hate the way they can be about that. I see no reason for them to tack on their stupid charges and that's a lot of money, especially when you aren't expecting it. I'd be asking questions. At least let em' know they can't take advantage of you if they try. ?

I'm lucky I guess. We love our delivery man for UPS, just don't like UPS and huge fees.

We've been reviewing products for EF for over 4 years without any brokerage fees showing up for shipments to us in Canada until the last two months. Both times the fees were about $25 and the first time I so so shocked I just told the UPS guy to take it back, I don't want it. The second time was a much bigger order so I really had no choice. If I only get one item each time it's costing me $25 to do review on a 'free' product. I don't know if it's just Canadian customs clamping down or what's happening but it has now became much more cost effective to buy in country. Eden is loved by us, almost like a member of the family, but I can't keep paying for these huge fees.

I have no idea what it is obviously but I was talking with my partner and trying to figure out what it could be and we were thinking maybe customs is "clamping down" because this started happening about a month or so ago and this is the time that people are typically buying xmas gifts online? But then again, if you've been reviewing for four years and never experienced this before, I'm not sure if that would really be it.

They are obviously clamping down for whatever reason. That would be awesome if Eden opened a store up here.

I had called the infoline the first time it happened to me and asked if anything had changed. The guy, of course, said no. I explained to him that in over a year, I had never received any charges whatsoever and now all of the sudden we all are... so obviously something is different.

All he could say to me was that in some magical way, all those packages I got (and there were a hell of a lot.. sometime 3-4 a month) managed to slip through customs unnoticed. I called bullshit. He proceeded to just reiterate what he just said.

Im very worried about the package i have on order right now and seriously considering canceling it. Is there anyway to get Eden to ship through a different company? even simply Canada Post?

Well, I don't know about anyone else, but I will be specifically contacting EF before I submit my next order, so that they're aware of the order and can try and be proactive about possibly avoiding custom/brokerage fees. I don't really know what they *can* do, but the rep I was in contact with during this whole fiasco did advise me to let them know when I put in a new order.

I *really* don't want to stop shopping here at EF, because it's not just a sex shop, it's a community, you know? Plus, I doubt very much that there's any sex shop in Canada that offers gift cards in exchange for involvement with them! If it wasn't for the GCs I wouldn't be able to afford a lot of the stuff I buy, so I love that. But the fees...I know they're probably a part of ordering internationally, but that doesn't mean I have to like them. And I do have to wonder what has suddenly magically changed, that I've been ordering from EF for over four years and never had to pay a cent in extra fees until now. o_O

Well I think for Canada Post to deliver the package, then EF would have to ship USPS (since they're in the States) .. or at least that is what I think would have to happen.

That is what would happen. There's an option for it on the shipping page right beside UPS but any time I've tried to choose USPS I get a notice saying they don't ship that way. However, if it is customs then the charges would happen anyways.

I just got my package today and there was no fees on it, so hopefully things are changing. I wonder what EF is doing to be "Proactive".

Lately I've had to pay a few dollars in duty tax, and it's fine with me. The only problem is that my note to leave the package at the door is useless. I have to wait for their first note so that I can leave a check the following day. I have my package delivered at my boyfriend's house because there is an area where they can leave the package. So my issue is that I can't always be there to leave a check. Oh well.

My package came today and had fees but they were WAY less than what I was getting before. I was just wondering if it was possible to maybe include the duty and taxes in the shipping or an option to pay it during shipping or opt to pay it at the door?

I know other companies have done it and it would decrease the amount of times we get charged at the door. For me, it's not that I get charged (though the amount for a while was outrageous) anything it's that I have no way to actually get the package(without begging and pleading of those I know) because cash isn't accepted and I have nothing but cash.

Just a thought.

...They don't accept cash? That must differ from region to region, because they accepted cash from me. Then again, my package was physically delivered by Purolator since we don't have a local UPS branch...maybe that's the difference.

I think they don't accept cash as they would not be able to give your change back. But I remember a time when I left a 5$ in an envelope, which was a little bit more than was charged, and told them to keep the change on the note. I got my package. But I'm using checks now, not taking chances in case someone would take it.

They are not supposed to.. My ups man told us cheque or credit card so we started buying those gift credit cards from the convenience store but then the ups man said he couldnt accept them so he told us "I'm not supposed to but I'll just take cash". We're pretty lucky because we don't have cheques or CC's so if he didn't accept cash we wouldn't be able to order again.

I live in the US, and the only time I've been hit with customs is when it was a ground shipment (UPS) - air shipments have never been hit. I've been told that for the US, at least, this is typical.

It was fabric from Canada and it was $70 in fees and I died a little inside.

Wow, you guys get import fees too. That's a lot to pay for fabric. Recently all of our packages have been getting flagged, so I've been holding off on ordering.

*sigh* I am seeing these posts where people got reimbursed... I sent in a polite ticket about my COD for my last package, and got a "no can do about anything no reimbursement" message. :/ And mine was 30.30, which for me is kind of a lot of money when I don't have a job.

But whatever.

Though I am afraid to save up points for orders or do review items any more, because I really can't afford to pay COD on every package I get.

*edit*

Wow, I am really impressed with eden's quick response. I'm a happy camper now, and I guess I'll just suck it up on import fees and make sure I have a credit card waiting when my next shipment shows up.

Thanks eden for helping me out!
