EdenCafe Contests - AdSpam on Twitter to Win!?

Contributor: aliceinthehole aliceinthehole
So I keep seeing these great Giveaway Contests on EdenCafe and I'm glad they recently added the option of filling out a survey regarding your experience at EF. However, the other entry options are many and they all include advertising the cafe or following EF on Twitter.

Why does someone have to not only have and use a Twitter account but basically spam advertise these contests for entry? I think it would be much cooler if they had other ways to enter... like more games, only games, or answering open ended questions about the site, your opinions on improvements or current features, etc.

It just doesn't seem fair.

I don't have a Twitter account for many reasons, and I certainly won't get one just to spam advertise things on it, even if they are things as awesome as EF contest giveaways.

Le sigh.

Anyone else have this issue?

Any suggestions on how to enter that doesn't involve Twitter, Facebook, or other seemingly banal methods of contest entering?

All input is appreciated! Thanks!

It's pretty much advertising. When have you ever seen a giveaway that wasn't advertised obscenely, even in real life? The whole point of giveaways is publicity.

I am always one of the first ones to enter with the games, but I won't want to get a twitter, and I like to keep my Facebook for IRL friends only

I actually made a Twitter account so that I could enter the contests using that option. It wasn't really a big deal to do, and now it's so much easier to get my entries in. But yeah, like potstickers said, it's just an advertising thing. I don't do the daily entires coz I don't want to be super spamming, but I get why they have the system set up as they do.

The 'spam' entries though, allow other people to learn about the contest and enter it. I like the 'find something interesting on our site and tweet it' option better, because I actually go exploring and look at stuff I might not have seen. One week the 'something interesting' was Xtranormal videos, which are hilarious. This past week it was 'retweet a review you like' which may have helped some fellow reviewers get some comments.

This is a topic which has been brought up before.

It doesn't seem like spam to be. Nearly every blog giveaway includes Twitter and Facebook in their entries. If I'm getting a chance to win a prize for free, I don't see what the big deal is in helping advertise it. Honestly, advertising and driving traffic is the whole point behind holding giveaways.

It would take you 5 minutes to set up a new Twitter and Facebook account under your alias, so just because you choose not to doesn't mean it's not fair.

I hate Twitter. It's stupid. I do have a Facebook, but that is mainly because I attend college 900 miles away from my hometown. It's super easy to keep in touch. I've looked at my friends Twitter page and it's just...lame. I've considered opening an account just to get some entries, but I felt like that is cheating so I didn't do it. But it's tempting. I really wish there were other ways to enter and keep the odds more even.

I'd have to agree. I had a Twitter account for awhile now, and do not mind posting it to my twitter. If anything, I think it's nice to be able to share such a sweet giveaway to my twitter followers.

Also, I would feel differently if Twitter was required to enter the contest, but it is actually just a bonus entry so it is not mandatory.

Hahaha I have a twitter account that i've never used in my life, and i have no followers and such on, so I just spammed it for the contest. IF I cared about twitter, I agree that'd be annoying. :/

I don't have an account on any of the social networking sites, so I just never enter any of those things.

It's free advertisement so I can see why they would do it. I have a twitter account that I only use for such things. I do wish there was more skill to winning so it's not like you said.. twitter spam.

The only thing that bugs me is the need to have the twitter account. I really hate twitter.

Sorry, but I have off-topic question: do we need to fill EVERY single entry to have a chance to win or just some of them would be enough?

Every entry is an entry, so filling out every entry can increase your odds, but you don't have to fill them all out if you don't want to. At least as far as I'm aware anyway

I hate Twitter, Facebook and MySpace type media. I broke down and finally created an Eden profile for Facebook and shortly thereafter, we can no longer enter via Facebook (no fault of Eden's), but I absolutely refuse to set up a Twitter account or anything else. It is a huge waste of my time to enter contests for toys I have a slim-to-none chance of winning anyway. If it is a toy I really want, I will buy it. My time is worth more than the aggravation of the multiple entries, and Twits, and shares, and whatnot's daily.

More power to everyone else. I will gladly step aside and allow someone else a chance whom has the patience for all that stuff.

Hi Alice,

The Twitter entries aren't mandatory. They're simply bonus entries for those who would like to take advantage.

We do try to do other site-related entries. For example, this week, you can enter by following OhMiBod on EdenLink, or adding some OhMiBod to your wishlist, both of which get you some extra EdenPoints for while you're entering the giveaway.

Honestly, since we began doing the weekly giveaway this way, our entries have increased exponentially. But thanks, all of you, for your suggestions. We'll take them into consideration for future contests and see if we can't find a way to make everyone happy.

That is how giveaways work on the Internet. Because a giveaway is essentially an advertisement where OTHER people do the work.

In fact, I think that the survey is kind of silly and pointless.

Hi Adriana,

Oh, I hope our contributors don't think the surveys just get filed away and never used. We look over them all, and they've have been really insightful.

We get to find out what you guys think of our various programs which helps us to know for sure what you really like and what we should be changing. This is more helpful to us than I can say.

Thanks Hope you have an awesome holiday.

I HAVE a Twitter, but I don't like to use it, I almost closed the account down until I realized I would need it for EF, but I wish there was another method.

I've used the tweet entry option before, but I always got in trouble with Twitter for it. I never spammed, but I guess because it's a new account (seperate from my main one) it looked suspicious somehow. Now I never use it because it was a bother.
