#BillofRights - 6th Amendment - You Have the Right to Vent

Contributor: Ansley Ansley

Monday morning. You wake up fifteen minutes late, knowing this seemingly minimalistic amount of time would ordinarily be of little consequence - except it's currently pouring rain in very large, vision-hampering drops. The kids are screaming; they can't find their school supplies even though you remember specifically telling them to put their backpacks by the door. Or your significant other is crankier than a snake and is making your morning seem really, really difficult. And this is all before seven o'clock in the morning. The day just continues to spiral downhill:

- Spill coffee in lap *check*
- Almost lock the keys in the car *check*
- Boss notices you're late arriving *check*
- Customers/co-workers are being especially difficult *check*
- It's a very horrible, no good, very bad day *check*

So...what now? Do you bottle it up inside and let it build until you eventually explode on the next person who decides to rattle the cage?

Or, do you have a tried and true system of venting? Who is your "go-to vent" person? What kind of things do you find yourself venting about on a normal basis?

I usually vent to my best friend...then get on EF and try to do something productive. Just going through the forums seems to help.

It depends. Sometimes I’ll hold on to things, sweetly suffering in silence, even when I’m trying to just let it go. My closest friend is definitely my go-to person. We're not living in the same city anymore but we talk a few times a week, and I’m not really a phone person. I also have therapy on a biweekly schedule, which is helpful.

My husband and I vent to each other about most things. He has a good friend he will talk to if I'm not available or something but I really only vent to him.

usually i vent to my man, but sometimes he seems uninterested or even says things to make me more angry! I need to find a better way of venting before I start bottling everything up :/

I end up bottling things up, I know I shouldn't but sometimes the stuff that stresses me out is so insignificant that venting to someone else seems petty.

I try to be careful about venting since cathartic activities actual lead to more expressions of the same emotion. But I have a few dear friends who I can talk things out with or vent to as needed. Normally I'll end up venting about classes, problems with what ever class is frustrating me at the moment, and any of the interpersonal drama that might be happening that people try to suck me into.

I usually vent to my partner. And he takes it all in and then gives me advice.

I'll vent to my mom-she's awesome, she always has something to say that cracks me up and relieves the tension. My cats are my 'therapy' when things go downhill, but mainly I'm the type of person that can't keep my mouth shut when someone does or says something really rude or annoying so I have to vent right then. (not always a good thing...)-but I do try and be mature and polite but firm.

I hold a lot things in and sometimes they come out at the wrong time in a big way. I have been getting better and letting go a little at a time so it doesn't all build up

When I have to vent I do it with my best friend, my wife. She's always behind me and always makes me feel better. I used to mostly vent about work, but I've since switched jobs and now have my dream job and haven't needed to vent as much.

I'm British. I'll have a nice cup of tea and that will make everything better.

Or not. But it's amazing how much stopping for a tea break can help.

I guess I'm pretty lucky to have a good friend to vent to. Really puts things in perspective sometimes.

I am usually really bad at keeping it to myself when I'm upset. I generally vent to my boyfriend or whoever happens to be around. :c
