#InternationalWomensDay - 2013 - End Violence Against Women

Contributor: Bleu Bleu
I actually don't like days like this. Not because of the message they stand for, it's a good one but because women themselves think we "need" a day like this.

Seriously, women aid every way in the ways the stereotypes that let women STAY unequal in American culture. I say American culture because other cultures, though women's rights are a big thing in every culture that's becoming westernized, it's not such an "issue." I say that even with women coming out in other cultures to say they should have rights too...they tend to take it from a standpoint of we should be equal and we are ALL human (and really they want the minimum of HUMAN rights, not women rights). I don't understand how women want exceptions to certain rules (or conveniences because of their gender) yet scream "equality" in protests.

In the post itself is says, "This holiday serves to remind us that women are still not on equal footing with men in the work place and various other arenas in life but it's a fight we are not going to abandon any time soon." Do we seriously need a reminder? I feel like this is saying to the world "YES, REMEMBER THAT WOMEN ARE STILL NOT EQUAL." And I feel like it's going to remain an issue if everyone is "reminded" of it every year. Do you expect that one day women will just make the same as a man? I don't. Actually, I know I will make less than a man of my same field of work but I don't feel threatened by it. I don't mind it. I just fight to do what I can to hold a position of power and make someone need me in that work force. I have two things working against me, I'm black and a female. Yet black people aren't like "We wanna make the same as whites" or every other race is complaining of the money they make or their standing in companies based on race.

Women themselves don't see everyone as the same. That is why there are days like this. Until everyone is truly the same and when women don't walk around like they can just be exceptions to rules. I hear women on daily basis saying that since men don't bleed every month that they wont understand periods and what women go through and since men can't get pregnant then they will never understand the contributions they make to the world with just their uterus alone.

I'm not gonna strike in 2017 and use sex as a weapon against men! How rude and horrible. That's just even more of a reason why women are looked at differently because they do this type of stuff. And it was even planned 4 years in the future. My boyfriend is not the reason why there are gender issues and I wont punish him for it at all.

In my Human Sexuality class, we cover some gender issues and find that a lot of mothers reinforce gender inequality (most likely without realizing it). So many women are kinda doing this to themselves without thinking about it (and many great feminist writers would say the same).

In short, I think International Women's Day is a stupid day. I also hate Black History Month, also. I think when we can just live every day LIKE we are EQUAL rather than pointing out a day for every woman to be reminded that we aren't equal. I think I'm equal with a man and I don't need my paycheck to state that in any way. We generally live longer than men anyway, so why worry about it?

I would like this day but I really haven't heard too much about it except for on Eden. Also curious, is there a mens day? It would only seem fair.

I don't disagree with you, in fact I very much agree with you. I feel the same way about a lot of things - stop making it an issue and it won't be an issue. (To sum it up in a very non-complicated package, that is.)

We should celebrate and encourage our differences while recognizing how much alike we really are. I think women do more harm than good a lot of times. We've been taught to be apologetic for being smart and aggressive that it makes us bitches or weak. If a man is smart and aggressive, that just means he was "raised with ambition". Fuck that noise.

I've never heard of the holiday, but I'm happy it exist. My home isn't a traditional one, with my wife being older than I and her having a fantastic career and me being a stay home father who supports her and her career anyway I can.

Sadly enough I think women will always be considered "equal, but different" although the military is actually becoming more open in accepting women as equal to their male counterparts. Hopefully the rest of the country will come around!

I have honestly never heard of this until now. I do believe some day both men and women will have equal rights and benefits, I just hope to see it in my lifetime.

I think men and women have some differences and that's great! I do have hope that we will be equal, even while we have differences.

It's mostly celebrated in Eastern European countries as it originated in Russia. It hasn't quite taken on in the western half of the world.

I didn't do anything for IWD because I didn't really know much about it. I have a feeling that there will always be some sense of "men are superior" because it has been drilled into our society for such a long time, but I truly hope I am wrong.

Not only do I think women will eventually have equal footing with men but I hope that one day the whole notion of a gender binary will be obsolete.

I'm a big activist for trans rights, but womens day is also very important to me, because without gender equality, there can be no such thing as trans rights.

Why I didn't know this was a holiday. I'll have to keep it in mind for next year.
I don't think we'll ever have the exact same rights and benefits as there are some unavoidable differences but I hope that someday we'll be able to come close.

My sister and her partner are amazing advocats! They have twin girls that they are raising to challenge gender rolls. I let my children wear whatever they want and play with whatever toys they want... why limit their creativity because of a color or pattern?
