Flagging Review Comments

Contributor: Tori Rebel Tori Rebel
I'd like to have the ability to flag review comments, just as we're able to flag posts in forum discussions. I've commented on reviews lately and gotten rather aggressive and/or offensive responses that I would like to be able to flag as 'this response seems overly-emotional' or 'i find this offensive' just as we can in the forums. Is this something EF would be able to do for us? Thoughts?

I think it's a good idea. Our reviews are our opinions, and someone dissing that, because they don't like the particular toy or don't care for our opinion of it is something that isn't right.

Saying something like, "I have to disagree, I really did enjoy..." Or, "Interesting, I didn't care for this at all because...." are appropriate. Insulting someone's opinion is really different.

There are ways, also, to give constructive criticism, especially for new reviewers, without being rude also. (I know I've done it, when new reviewers have made errors, which they can then go back and correct for BETTER scores on their reviews.)

I haven't seen the posts you are talking about, Tori, but as far as I have seen, all your review are SO well written and great!

Awww, thanks P'Gell Specifically, and I have let admin know about this because I was curious about the protocol on how to handle it, I have seen reviews with info listed that is simply outright unsafe and also ones that state info that's completely untrue. I responded as pleasantly as possible, correcting the issue so as not to mislead people or end up having someone get hurt (or at least have someone not have something end up in the ass-box of their local ER) and was basically told in return (not nicely I might add) that the opinion in the review trumped fact and that I was out of line in correcting them. I really do try to be nice, and forgiving as well, because things can so easily be misinterpreted when typed, but the comments I received in return were not meant to be pleasant at all.

That's a very interesting suggestion, Tori. I'll be sure to bring this into staff discussions.

Everyone else--feel free to keep offering your feedback on this thread.

I only had one instance where something was inappropriate. At that time, I just emailed Gary about it and he took care of it.

I think that would be a great idea. I haven't had this kind of situation occur as of yet but I can see that it would be quite helpful to have the flagging option.

I have in the past seen reviews that needed some fine tunning and I try to be polite and give positive criticism to help the person. I always reread what I write to make sure the intonation of what I write is not negative so if someone were to read it they would not be offended. It is really easy for me to get offended by small comments so I am extra cautious when I comment, lol.

We actually talked about doing this months ago - as far as I know, it's already in the plans. It might have just taken a backseat to other stuff that programmers were working on.

Holy cow!

You guys, please, please, PLEASE take into consideration that flags are for serious abuse and being flagged - or over using them needlessly - can get you banned. We already have an over use of them for situations that are less than serious or incredibly personal. Making it so review comments could be flagged would absolutely ensure abuse any time anyone was displeased with a comment or vote.

We're adults here. We need to be able to handle a bit of criticism and be able to discern when a situation is truly a problem and when it's something we just don't like.

While flags on review comments may be in the works, please keep in mind that they are not to be misused and they will be primarily for spam. If you flag someone, it should be for breaking the EoC, because it's a serious infraction, not because you disagreed or felt a bit offended.

I have never flagged anything as of yet and hope I never will have to. I haven't even flagged men who would write me very inappropriate messages. I never thought I could or should flag them. I just deleted the messages and left it at that.

But I can see how some people might abuse the system. But I appreciate the system is there in case I might want to flag something.
