Due to a situation that began on this thread and escalated in private messages on Eden’s message system, we have decided to ban a contributor. This is not something we ever have to do – because we do not usually have instances where there are hateful comments being made to other members of this community. It is extremely rare and thus we take it extremely seriously.

It is one thing to disagree and to argue – as you all know, we don’t take a thread down or remove comments simply because someone starts arguing or saying something negative, even when they say negative things about the company, we do not censor.

But we draw the line at hate – when someone is calling another person hateful names, it will not be tolerated. At all. I don’t think I need to list the types of words I’m talking about – you all know what racial, homophobic and sexist epithets are – and how hurtful they can be. Those derogatory terms have no place here and we will not be party to unacceptable behavior and slurs.

So, after discussion with Eden’s owner, it was decided to ban Perish and disable his account.

In the interest of total transparency, we decided to tell everyone.

I would like to say a few words. I haven't felt this much support from administrators and staff in regards to these kind of slurs on any sort of forum. I feel that this place is a very mature sex-positive community, and I can really say I love being a part of it. Thank you, Victoria, and the rest of Eden's staff.

I totally support this decision because we don't need that here. It's petty and totally unhelpful. Thank you EF for being so considerate. I've never seen the need for this before and hopefully it won't happen again!

I'm very anti-censorship but there IS a line...

Perish crossed it and, while he didn't hurt my feelings any, I was very worried about the effect his words and opinions would have on others who are less thick skinned and who got the harsher insults.

Arguing can be entertaining and educational and stimulating. Name calling and intentionally hurtful interactions are none of those things.

Good call, if ya ask me. (Which no one ever does but, yanno...)

Exactly. As big as I am on anti-censorship and the right to say whatever the Hell you want, there really was no reason for an altercation of that nature. What he said was completely out of line, a pugnacious and unnecessary comment. He can say it all he wants, but this community desires an open, friendly, intellectual environment, and that sort of behavior is NOT conducive to such an environment.

Nicely done EF. Not only was the decision a good one, but informing us of the situation shows you didn't take it lightly and are not in the habit of randomly banning folks for inconsequential things.

I certainly hope the original person asking advice got what she needed in spite of the distraction cause by this guy.

I'm totally behind that decision. I just read the thread and I was genuinely horrified by what was said. I'm also blown away (in the good way) by everyone else who was soooooo composed about it all. I'm humbled by your collective awesomeness!

So this is what I miss while I've taken a little reviewing hiatus with the hub?

I'm incredibly disappointed with the behavior I saw from said contributor but absolutely happy to see the way everyone handled themselves, especially EF! To ban a contributor is a hard choice to make and I know that while this seems like a pretty cut and dry situation, it sucks to let people go. However, I just want to say I'm sorry for anyone that was affected- having to deal with drama in our little sanctity is just down right awful. I come here to get away from all the bs of the world and to see it find it's way right onto our forums is upsetting, I'm glad I missed this while it was going on!

He did go way over the line and it was a good decision on the part of the staff, but I can't help but think everyone in the thread that responded directly and forcefully to Perish just gave him the power to ruin the discussion. The way I read it most of the responders took his "suggestion" personally and just made it worse. If his one comment had been politely dismissed or ignored I doubt it would have escalated at all. It wasn't too hard to tell he wasn't serious about the discussion.

I think the major issue at hand is the crude PMs he sent another contributor, which were homophobic and completely uncalled for. We have plenty of disagreements and heated discussions on that forum, but outright attacking someone in that manner is more than a little inappropriate.

Well, I feel that a suggestion he made was counter productive. Everyone brought attention to it and said that it was not very helpful. The mature thing would have been if Perish decided not to be rude about it at all, and just ignore the "flame". I feel he's a guy who's far too used to Halo Online play, especially in his profile proclaiming to love "raping the n00bz". He came off very sexist, misogynistic, and called me a faggot in PMs. He claimed he had his dick in my mouth, and that my avatar was an ugly fuck. When I explained that I was going to the admin, he started backpeddling and saying "oh, no, you're hot, blahblah" and he's straight. Sounds like he wanted to get out of trouble.
Also, he's contacting me now through his email to my EF account still, and also my email address.

I disagree. I never thought he was joking at all and even if he was there is NO room for joking like that when it comes to discussing BDSM, which can involve potentially dangerous situations.

I, personally, would have let it go had it not been the second time in as many discussions regarding BDSM that he'd made disparaging remarks.

We might easily ignore those types of remarks but what of the people asking the questions?

How easily will they ask the next one? Or will they not ask at all?

I have to say I was quite upset by his remarks and am glad action has been taken. It is incredibly difficult for some to come forward and ask questions, even on a forum, but especially when it's about fetishes and the like, that makes it even more difficult because of the taboo behind them. I'm glad to see action has been taken and hope that the original poster of that thread will ask as freely if they have a question in the future.

LOL! Like the pun.

TOTALLY agree with the decision. I'm all for free speech, but there's no place here for that kind of disgusting behavior. I've certainly had my own share of spats on this forum with a certain contributor, but you can get hot, heated and angry without ever crossing into that sort of immature, offensive ranting.

Thank you so much for dealing with this in such a fast, decisive, and transparent manner. I wasn't involved when everything went crazy, but having been on the receiving end of that kind of hate and flaming on other forums, it means a lot to see it dealt with here, to prevent more people from getting burned. Victoria, Eden Staff, you guys rock.

I haven't been on here long, but from what I have read it was a well thought out decision to ban his/her account. This site has no room for bigotry, name calling, or implied hate. Everyone here has the tacit obligation to be kind to one another no matter if they identify as straight, homosexual, bisexual, transgendered, or of any race.

I hope to read and submit nothing but positive posts and experiences on this wonderful forum in hopesto educate others and learn new things myself.

This is not the place for hate speech. Eden is a safe haven for a lot of people. Nobody should ever worry about having bigoted comments made to them here.
