Repeat and Unneccessary Flags

Contributor: gone77 gone77
Hello, everyone!

I wanted to address something I've noticed in the abuse reports I've been receiving of late. There have been some older posts that have been flagged several times well after the fact. As stated in the Expectations of Conduct, I'm notified every time a post is flagged and the flags are investigated ASAP. The flagged contributor is contacted soon after flagging to resolve the issue.

While I do appreciate you guys flagging posts where appropriate, repeat flags on older posts are unnecessary. This creates more work for me as I must contact the person who reported the abuse and inform them that the matter has been dealt with/resolved. Now should the flagged contributor continue to make offensive/inappropriat e/spam posts, then you may flag them and the matter will be investigated and handled.

Thanks!

Yeah, I've never used the flag option either, but this information is definitely good to know.

We certainly do not want to make your job any harder. Thanks for all you do!

I totally understand what you are saying and asking.

Maybe some of this is due to people believing that things will be taken down if enough people find it inappropriate, rude, racist etc. I know this isn't the case, but is it explained?

As a general rule, we do not delete threads that are controversial or that people find offensive. Despite personal feelings, these types of posts usually lead to good discussions. And what's offensive to one person might not be offensive to another. It's a delicate line we on the staff walk when it comes to deciding what is egregiously offensive and what is just a hot-button topic or issue. Just because a single post is flagged repeatedly does not mean it will be removed. If a post has been flagged and has not been removed within a few days, it's most likely going to remain and further flags are not needed.

Now if someone has a lot of their posts validly flagged as being offensive, then the contributor will be spoken to and we will follow the rules we've laid out in the Expectations of Conduct.

I hope this clarifies things for you.
