Relaxation and communication are key, in addition to lubrication. I don't have much pain anymore. If there is a sudden jab of pain, we stop, talk about it, and apply more lubrication as necessary.

If it hurts, you're doing it wrong. That's why I picked "sort of". With a bit of slowing down, communicating, and slowing down some more, the sensations are incredible.
It doesn't help that my eyes are bigger than my butt; and I sometimes want to start out with something like the Tantus Vamp instead of warming up with something smaller.

The second time I ever had real sex was receiving anal, it didn't hurt at all!
