First anal toy ever...

Contributor: Officer Oddy Officer Oddy
I have never, ever, ever had anything ITB before. I have always thought it was on the gross side (no offense; I mean, have you SEEN the way guys fuck girls' asses in porn? No, thank-you!). It always seemed uncomfortable to me. But now, after hearing so many things about how orgasms can be with anal toys/sex, I'm curious. Plus, I'm also looking for something new.

So, my question is, what would be a good starter anal toy?
A plug, a vibe, a plug/vibe combo?
I have no idea what I'm looking for.

Also, what is the difference between "normal" lube and anal lube? What anal lube should I buy?

I am in uncharted waters, here.

You've reviewed some small vibes - re-purpose them first, then buy some new toys.

As a beginner I love small glass toys, they are so smooth and easy to use - it jsut takes a small amount of lube - and silicone lube is OK with glass. My favorite silicone lube is Pjur Back Door - the botanicals help relax the natural tenseness that beginners experience.

If you have Njoy Pure Wand the small end is a great beginner option as well.

Enjoy the journey - I'm sure you'll get plenty of useful advice @ EF.

I stongly suggest Maximus lube. It's the best sold on this(and most all others) site.

I vote a small vibe just to start.

Nothing yet? Start out with a finger or two to find out how it feels. Use gloves if you want.

If you decide you like it then I'd recommend something silicone to start with.

But it has parabens, which some people are sensitive to.

As a starter anal toy, I highly recommend the Pleasure Pearls. It's a small glass toy. I think glass is great to start because it slides in and out sooo effortlessly. They typically need less lube than toys of other materials, which is a bonus when you're talking about anal play, because you want the toy to slide easily. Plus, being glass, it's easy to sterilize and keep clean, plus you can use any kind of lube with it.

The difference between a "normal" lube and an "anal" lube is that an anal lube is going to be much thicker, and generally doesn't dry out as quickly. Since the anus is not self lubricating (like the vagina) you need more lube, thicker lube, lube that lasts longer, etc. I also love Maximus as an anal lube, but it does contain parabens, which some people can be sensitive to.

I also wanted to say that for me, when I first started anal play, it didn't feel good right away. It didn't hurt, nor did it feel uncomfortable, it just felt really weird. It took about half a dozen times of engaging in anal play before it actually felt good. So keep that in mind as you explore this, it can feel very strange at first, but if it hurts or is uncomfortable, stop immediately because something is wrong. It should not ever hurt, even in the beginning. Have fun!

I can recommend a couple of great starter toys from Tantus. The Little Flirt and Silk Small are excellent for introducing anal play. You can move fairly quickly from there up to the Eaze, then my favorite non-vibrating Tantus plug, the Ace Small. From there I'd go to the Ripple Small and the Compact.

Personally, my favorite is the Zing. I love the vibrations and it has just enough texture to make me gasp when it goes in, and I can feel the texture when it's in and vibrating

Metis, Tantus's President, has written and spoken a lot about lubes, including in regards to anal play:

Lube Part 1
Lube Part 2

I ordered the Pleasure Pearls to start. We'll see where it goes.

Thank you all so much for the advice! I'll be back with more questions, probably.
