I don't really know what "normal" is (and whatever it is, I'm usually far from it!) but I clean inside and out. I prefer to be hairless but waxing isn't always convenient, so shaving is an easy substitute.

I'll do a bit of shaving, but I do that in general when showering, so it's nothing that happens right before anal. I use the toilet, give myself a courtesy wipe with a moist wipe, and he'll trim and file his nails, then let me feel them and judge if they're done well enough to warm me up.

I don't have anal sex, but I do have cooter sex! Hee. Hee. However, I'm really strange about hair, always have been. So I take VERY careful measures to keep clean and totally hairless. Not just for sex, but for every day. It's a hassle and sometimes I find myself cussing (today!) while dragging out the epilator. I was epilating today and this question came to mind... everyone says when you epilate, you will be hair free for AT LEAST 3-4 weeks. Am I just a freak because it starts growing back the same damn day! Wonder why?
Anyways, I gave up shaving a year ago. I had been shaving like crazy and since I want NO hair, doing so daily was really irritating. Quicker than any other method, but very irritating. I tried electrolysis, at-home hair removal machines, hair inhibitors, EVERYTHING! Then around last Dec. I had been plucking by hand for months and it was taking so much time and really bothersome. I could not stand a single hair though. I went to sugaring for a loong time, but it hardly took away ANY hair! I hated it and it left me severely bruised. My cooter would be black! I also had a nasty experience with Veet. I nearly burned my cooter off, literally! I come across photos of my burned cooter just yesterday. Ha Ha. I felt it was neccessary to take pics of the injury...
Anyways, so the best method I've come to find (for anal too!) is epilating. I went with a cheap ($40-something) epilator. It was a really good deal. Came with a carrying pouch, multiple shaver heads, cleaner, brush, etc! I never have used the shavers since I epilate only though. Anyways, it has been much better. If you can handle a little stubble, epilating would be perfect. I guess it depends on the person, but my hair grows back instantly. But like I said, if you can handle some pricklies, you wouldn't have to epilate daily. I epilate EVERY last inch of my privates. Nothing gets left out. Inner labia majora, everything. To epilate the entire down stairs region, it takes probably 15 min. Less than that, but I like to be sure. If I've kept up and epilated every couple of days, it only takes minutes to pull all the hairs out.
SO. I don't know about anal sex, but if you're looking to rid the hair there, epilating is best, IMO. It doesn't leave razor burn, itchy, red bumps like razors and waxing. It simply pulls the hair out. Not even painful!
When preparing for sex, I do nothing. Lol. Of course I shower daily and keep things clean and I already epilate plenty so I never have to do extra when it sex time comes. I like it that way. Allows some spontaneity.
Now, on a side note... I was reading ex-pornographer Donny Pauling's stories about porn and he was talking about the girls having... "shit all over their a**holes." Sorry! I didn't wanna say it, but how else? LOL. He said they literally have shi* everywhere. Disgusting! So I guess things get left behind more often than not so maybe some kind of clean up anally isn't such a bad idea? I don't really know how it works. I guess you sometimes can't help it and things get messy? Either way, I'm not brave enough to find out for myself.
