Lubricants for anal sex!

Contributor: Peggi Peggi 09/03/2011

Although I enjoy anal once my partner and I have actually gotten into it, initiating it is difficult because it is always painful for me starting off, even with some of the lubes we've tried, and starting off with smaller toys, etc. I am fine with toys, even larger than he is! And position doesn't seem to matter! So, we got to wondering if maybe using a better lube would change things a bit! So, which of the following do you think would be best to purchase, and if there is something else you'd suggest please let me know!

Pjur Back Door link the botanicals added to the silicone are helpful.

Maximus has gotten my biggest toys in and never let me down. A good silicone lube like Better Sex Essentials would be a good choice too.

The only kind I've tried is the JO kind. So I guess that one

I have not tried maximus, so I can not compare it to JO. I love the JO H2O, as far as water based lubes go. JO brand lubes have never let me down. Although I did not like the cooling lube, but that was not JO's fault. I have never found a warming or cooling lube I have liked.

I use JO all the time.

I used to love Maximus, but I found that I'm really sensitive to parabens and glycerin, even anally, so I had to switch. Maybe you have a similar problem. Now I like Bodyfluid, Sliquid Sassy Booty, and Ride H2O. Bodyfluid is silicone, so it can't be used with any silicone toys, and the other two are waterproof.

If I'm having anal sex with my partner, I go for the Bodyfluid because it has no glycerin or parabens, but lasts a long time. If I'm using a toy, I'll go for the Sassy Booty or Ride. They're water-based but last a pretty good amount of time, and also have no parabens or glycerin. Hope that helps.

I use Maximus for anal and vaginal play. I am not sensitive to parabens, and I like having 1 go-to lube that is water based, works for everything and is compatible with everything.

I used to use Maximus, but I had an allergic burn reaction to it and grew away from it. Now I use Probe Thick & Rich, and it's become my go to lube. Super slick, but also super string, and therefore super messy. But it works amazingly when it's used.

Similar to the others - Maximus was great until it started burning. Now I use Probe Thick and Rich and it seems to be very hypoallergenic/non-bur ning-to-sensitive-peop le.

My recommendation is to get sample packs of all the lubes you can and see which works best for you.

I'm definitely a minority, but I prefer spit. I have reactions to ingredients in most water-based lubes (glycerin, parabens). Silicone lube is fine, and I use it to slip in plugs occasionally, but it slips too much and makes me feel unconnected for actual PIA sex. So, maybe you've already tried it, but if not, just remember that that can be an option too.

Definitely Maximus - we've had no burning issues at our house. We found the Jo anal to be a little too thin for us.

Another vote for Maximus, right now it just about the only lube we use for everything. Never had any issues with it.
Regarding saliva, my first anal experience was with saliva only......the experience was so bad that I swore off anal sex for too long...

Sliquid Ride is working very well for us, she pegs me with an Outlaw. I really thought System Jo H2O anal was great after using regular System Jo and KY Silk, but Sliquid Ride is even better, by far.

I really like my Systen Jo H2O anal lube. It has parabens in it though, which some people are sensitive to. I haven't tried any of the others, but system jo works so well for me.

The big problem with saliva is that it's too variable. The second biggest problem is that it usually is too thin. I find it works OK on fingers and smaller toys, but for prolonged play or larger toys a true lube is a must.

Only use small toys anally- I don't like the friction from constant movement in and out, but for vibes and beads astroglide is amazing, so it would likely work well for anal sex too

I haven't tried any of these so I can't speak for them, but I love Pink (silicone) for anal. The biggest thing is that it doesn't dry out. Super slick! And Pink is supposed to be very safe, so that's a plus.

I just use spit. I do not like very many lubes. I got with maximus since that is what others said the most.

Peggi - one important thing to consider is where the pain is and what kind of pain it is. It may be lube related, but also possibly not. If it's burning then definitely try a different lube (look for hypoallergenic). Another lube problem might be not enough lube inside, causing the toy or penis to pull on the anal canal and rectal wall. For this you might want to try using a small infant's oral medicine syringe to squirt some lube up into your rectum.

If the pain is right at the anus and seems to be from the stretch then you're not warming up enough - try a vibrating plug or a vibrating tapered toy.

If it's deeper inside then it might be one of the other muscles that holds the rectum up and regulates the movement of materials in it. The most likely of these are the valves of Houston (3-5" inside) or, if he's very long, the sling that holds the rectum in an S-shape. These require warm-up with longer toys to relax.

I've only ever used Maximus for anal play. I like that it's water based so I can use it for sex and toys. A one stop bottle. I have only had issues with it burning when I was a newbie and I would rush things and caused little tears or irritations. After a really long session, if I've gone too long without adding a little more lube, it will burn again upon reapplication due to all the skin friction but then disappears. So I have very little complaints, if any, about Maximus. It's a great product. And it has lasted FOREVER! Now it's time for me to restock tho and I am looking for an alternative that is a bit more natural and paraben free. So I am in the same boat with you in the search for a good anal lube again.

water based lubes have a tendency to absorb into the skin and lose their slickness when it comes to anal play. I would recommend something that keeps it slickness for a long time such as a silicone based lube. Of course you have to be careful that you don't use it with any silicone toys.
