Nah, it's nice, but not unnecessary. Sometimes it's good to have a few in a day, sometimes I'll go a week without, totally depends on what's going on and how busy I am.

When I was in my 20s, it was 2-3 times a day, in my 30s it was usually twice a day and now I've mellowed to just once most days. Although...I do still have days with 2 orgasms once or twice a week, especially if I have sex with my wife early in the morning.
My wife's ideal frequency is once or twice a week. Fortunately, I love masturbation, too...
