As far as fast vs. longer - I always preferred longer. I always thought I had marginal PE (premature ejaculation) issues - so I often used distractions and pauses to help me last longer. That doesn't always work because often the last thing my partner wanted was for me to pause.
Timing has always been a big issue. We solved this problem with toys. I bring my wife to 1-3 orgasms. Once this is done we switch the focus to me. The nice thing is that once she is primed - she'll often orgasm 1-2 more times during intercourse - especially in her favorite cowgirl position.

If I cum fast it's likely because she has done something that's got me a little too excited, so it would be a compliment.

It all depends on your definition of fast. Sex without an orgasm for me is still great sex. When I cum fast it is usually because it has been a week or so without sex and I'm extremely turned on. If it has been a few days I can last a long time.
I'd say if the guy always cums fast it is a premature ejaculation issue
