I would say take some time and round off the nail as best you can. If that does not work, use a glove. It may feel a bit different but that is better than causing pain. Another option would be to use a small probe/dildo to warm him up.

My boyfriend and I had this issue with each other, unfortunately. We're both nail-biters and, being in a long distance relationship, decided that we would cease biting our nails for our time together during the summer.
