Do you prefer the term Straight or Hetero or something else for.... heterosexuals?

Contributor: P'Gell P'Gell
There has been discussions on what GLBT people prefer to be addressed and referred as and by. I'm hetero, for some reason the word "straight" bothers me.

To me, it infers that everybody else is... twisted or not right. I think using "straight" to imply heterosexuality is a bit insulting to people who do not identify as hetero. I, personally, prefer the word Hetero or Heterosexual for het people.

What term do you prefer and what is your basic orientation? I mixed GLBT together for one of the choices, so the poll wouldn't look like a scary test.

Honestly, I don't put a lot of thought into most labels. I identify as bisexual, and I don't mind being called that. I refer to heterosexuals, as straight or heterosexual. Haven't met anyone who bristled at being called straight. *shrug*

I use to term straight, but probably because it's much more common. I really don't care what term is used.

Straight, hetero, it doesn't matter to me what I get called.

I use the word straight. I've never thought about the fact that it might be offensive to some people. To me, heterosexual/hetero is the technical term and not something I would use in everyday converation. I might use heterosexual in a review, but orientation has never actually come up in any I've written.

I agree with Diabolical Kitty up to a point... I don't think the terms are stupid, just useless. Why do we need labels? What is wrong with Human?, Person?, You?. Why does everything need to be classified. Not everyone fits in a box, and personally, I hate being shoved into boxes.

I am hetero or straight. It doesn't bother me at all. I don't care about labels in the least. They are just words to me; they do not define who I am.

I'm pansexual and technically I prefer heterosexual for the same reasons as P'Gell, but a lot of the time I just say straight because it tends to work better in conversation. However, if I'm having a serious conversation focusing on sexuality/equality, I will usually say heterosexual because it more professional and clear.

I'm the llama! Whatever that means. I'm the infamous other category. I am bisexual, and I use the term straight.

Trans is a gender identity, not a sexuality.

I'm genderqueer and pansexual. I'm okay with straight.

I prefer straight, just because it's common English, I always have a hard time figuring all the this and that technical terms.

It doesn't bristle me, as the perceived insult isn't intended at heteros. It just seems to me that if hets are "straight" then people who are not heterosexual are... what? Twisted? Bent? Broken? I don't see GLBT people in those ways.

Maybe it's just me that sees it this way.

I think it's normal to be interested in others sexuality, as long as one is tolerant.

It sure helps to know someone's orientation when one is dating.

Classifying things is a normal, healthy human occupation. It's what we do. As long as it isn't done to ostracize people, or harm them, it is the way society works.

I normally use the word "Straight" but I agree with P'Gell, what does that say about people who are gay, that they are bent, or wrong. Using the word "Straight" bothers me a little bit, but the term is used more commonly than others.

Heck just as long as it's a word that's understandable and every person knows what it means, I'm OK. Straight is what works for me. I don't find it insulting. It'd be different if straight people were called "right people" Lol. Then that may be insulting to those who are something other than straight, but when people use the term straight I don't think anyone means it to insult...

I don't care what people use when talking about me, but I tend to use straight. To me, it feels like 'hetero' goes along with "homo", which I would never use when describing my gay and lesbian friends because it's so rude/has such a negative connotation. However, if one of my GLBT friends told me that they were offended or felt uncomfortable because I used straight, I would stop immediately!
