There is no world wide "age of consent." It varies from country to country and from state to state. There are also exceptions for partners close in age. (For instance, if the age of consent is 18, and a 16 year old girl is with an 18 year old boy, they are, in some states, considered as still being within the age of consent. Most age exceptions are within 3 years, with about 14 being the youngest either partner can be.)
When looking into this, I noticed the South raised their age of consent in recent years. Not that long ago, there were southern states with age of consent for girls as young as 12! They have been changed to about 16. In fact, 16 is the median age of consent in the US. But, some states have the AoC older. Usually the age of consent for young women is younger than the age of consent for young men. I don't really understand that.
