Trans/Queer/PoC-focuse d indie games?

Contributor: pestilence pestilence
Some of you may have heard of The Arkh Project, an effort to make an AAA game featuring an all-queer PoC cast (trans and non-binary people included) and created by queer PoCs. To put it lightly, the project isn't going swimmingly, and it disappointed me quite a bit because I'd love to see games like this happen.

Are there any indie video game devs focused on creating this sort of content on a smaller scale? I'd love to support any initiatives like this that are actually organized well, but I can't seem to find anything when I try. I know Bethesda's games have been pretty inclusive as of late, but I'd love to see any initiatives where queer PoC are the main protagonists.

I remember playing a small sprite game that was pretty queer, but I don't remember the name of it.

Also the game Bloodlust was created by the writer of Trans Girl Diaries and it's chock-full of trans stuff. It's not the best thing in the world, but I found it entertaining.

I really wish there were more games out there.

I have also heard of that project and I would LOVE for a game like that to be made. Unfortunately, the people running that project really have no idea what they're doing. All they basically had for DRAWINGS and they were asking for money. That is not how you do it in the game business. I wish that the project could move forward but I really don't see how it's going to if it has incompetent people running it. This isn't an insult to them, per se, because their hearts are definitely in the right place. They just need someone who actually knows the business more to help them out because otherwise, I don't see how it's ever going to happen.

there's a LOT of uh, yaoi/yuri/shonen ai/shojo ai (gay male porn/lesbian porn/gay male romance/lesbian romance)indie games out there, but that's all I've really seen for games focused on GLB (not seen any trans yet) people. I do always appreciate when games include GLBT characters or the ability to BE GLBT.

A lot of that stuff is fetishistic, unfortunately. And actually, there ARE "trans" games out there or at least there are "trans" hentai, etc. It only seems to focus on transfemales, though, and I don't think I've ever seen one that wasn't disrespectful. Have you heard of futanari (literally translated as "dual form")? It's generally pretty offensive, especially when called by the names of "dickgirl" or "shemale" porn. Some of the futanari is straight-up transfemales while others are females whose clitoris transforms into a phallus. They don't have scrotum or testicles but can usually ejaculate the same as a penis would. I'd like to see some LGBT games, etc. that AREN'T offensive or fetishizing. They can have porn of lesbians/gay people/transfemales/tr ansmales without fetishizing so games, etc. of this nature that DON'T insult people would be nice, too.

I wish that there were games that could incorporate it more than we see in like Sims or Dragon Age 2.

I definitely agree! I'm glad that there are games that have the option but here's the problem: Those games let you CHOOSE. In the Sims, Dragon Age 3, or Skyrim, you can be gay...or you can be not. But how many games do you see with gay characters (particularly MAIN gay characters) where you DON'T have a choice. Where it's already written into the story. I can't think of a single one. Sure, there are tons of games where the main character has a love interest but it's always a heterosexual relationship. It'd be nice to see some games, for once, that have gay relationships as part of the story instead of straight ones.

There's a link to play it in the middle of the article, but I thought y'all would be interested in reading the article too.

I think it wouldn't matter that much. I mean, look at Legend of Zelda. You don't really deal with Zelda all that much. Zelda could very easily be a boy and it wouldn't make a difference other than controversy.

YEAH I didn't even bother mentioning futa since most of them aren't actually transsexuals, more just women with dicks that are hyperfetishized hahah, not that "dickgirls" aren't part of the gender/sex spectrum. I personally am more than aware of pretty much every type of drawn porn, unfortunately, I've been super active in the online art communities all over the internet from a very young age. I've seen very little actual transsexual focused art in general, and definitely no respectful trans focused games. BUT, I will keep an eye out, that's definitely something interesting to look for.

I found one a while back, but it's more like a well-crafted Flash project rather than a game. It's made by a trans* woman about her transition.

Were you talking about the game Dys4ia by Anna Anthropy? Your link takes me back to that topic... Not a game for those who are epileptics, though.

I wish there were more games with trans* and queer characters in general. I've seen some games where there's at least a gay option, but like mentioned upthread, somethign where it wasn't just an option but a big part of the game (without exclusively being fetishistic or porn) would be great.

Unfortunately, I don't think it's ever going to be released. There's been some info making rounds that connects the makers back to an earlier video game scam. I really hope that the people involved aren't scammers but things look a little suspicious right now. God, that would be so low. D:
