Happy Veterans Day. Do you do anything "different" on Veterans Day?

Contributor: Bignuf Bignuf
It is strange to say "HAPPY" in front of this holiday, because it is ashamed that we must still have men and woman in uniform to protect us. We world is no less barbaric then it was 100, 1000, or 10,000 years ago. In some ways, it may be worse.

In any case, I plan to take a moment and actually say "THANK YOU" to those men and woman I see today, who I KNOW have, or are serving in our military and who, even if they never fought or were never wounded, took the risk and really gave of themselves to keep all of us free.

You may have the day off, or go shopping at all the sales today, but do you ALSO take any time to think about what this holiday is about and maybe also take that moment to say "THANK YOU" to those who have served? Memorial Day, we cannot face those who gave the "ultimate sacrifice" for our well being, but on Veterans Day, we can DIRECTLY thank those who are due our appreciation.

SO..what are YOU doing "different" today?

I will indeed say "thank you" to anyone I see in the military or a known veteran.

Being a military brat of a family well steeped in military service I have always spent Veteran's day being thankful that these men and women are there to keep us safe while wishing that one day they are out of a job!
As a homeschooling Mom I also take the day to have special lessons about both the meaning of the day and about military service. We live very close to a military base and it holds special meaning for my girls.

I'm definitely thankful for all they've done, I just don't really do anything to celebrate it.

In all honesty, in the past, I haven't even NOTICED the day. I feel ashamed saying that, but this year is different. My girlfriend and I are going out to the bar tonight to celebrate. She's a veteran this year. Though, she didn't get any action outside of the hangar, still she is "retired" from the Air Force.

I am thankful for everyone who has signed up to put their life on the line for millions of people they don't even know. I thought about it at one point in my life, but that thought scared the hell out of me. Anyone who can join and not be scared about that, or rather BE scared and STILL do it are heroes in my book, whether or not they actually fought in a war.

Hubby took the day off, and I'd like to go visit Grandpa's grave, but the barracks is always insane this time of year. Been thinking about him, though...
