Honestly....have you ever heard of "woman's day" (other then the magazine)?

Contributor: Bignuf Bignuf
Last I checked I have been a woman for all of my 50 years of life. I am a busy professional woman, so I am not "out of the loop" on most things.

Till I just got the email from EF about the special sale for "Woman's Day", I have NEVER HEARD of "woman's day" (and strongly suspect, like MANY "holidays" (this day and that day), it is an "invented" thing to sell more greeting cards. Pardon my skepticism buy there are SO many "holidays" now...that NO ONE "celebrates", I just take them ALL with a "grain of salt".

Have YOU ever heard of this "holiday", "WOMAN'S DAY" before???

Did you read the forum post we have about it? This one is definitely not something that was just invented for greeting cards.

Here's a list of March holidays. Check out March 8th. link

You're right. It, like most holidays, is an invented one. The world wasn't born with holidays! But it's meant to celebrate women all over the world who have made life a little better for the rest of us. How can that be bad?

International Women's Day is March 8th. Many, many countries around the world acknowledge and celebrate this holiday. United States doesn't celebrate it, and I don't know why.

Maybe I put it wrong. Of course they are all "invented", but we have a "holiday" for everything now...some really silly. Sweetest Day was invented by a bakery in Detroit to sell cakes between Valentines Day and other holidays, where there was a "sales gap".

Jan 6th is BEAN day. Jan 10 is PECULIAR PEOPLE DAY, July 7 is NATIONAL CHOCOLATE ICE CREAM DAY.

I think it is WONDERFUL to celebrate woman....but I try and do it EVERY day. I am a professional woman and have a daughter studying to be a surgeon. We don't talk it, we live it. I don't celebrate with a poster, a bumper sticker and a cupcake. I celebrate it by working 80 hour weeks and STILL being a wife and mother. My mother ran a factory. I celebrate WOMAN by example and by charities I support all the time. I have NOTHING against it...I am just surprised I NEVER HEARD of this one, and again, having "one day" we can a "celebration" can actually minimize our attention to that need EVERY other day.

I have now. THANKS. Amazing that this does get so little attention in the USA. Other then here, at EF, I sure have not heard mention of it ANYWHERE else (I read half a dozen papers and journals every morning as part of my job).

This is my first time hearing about it. But after reading about its long history, it was definitely not "invented" for commercial reasons.

Even if it were, I would still celebrate this holiday without reserve. It's true that we should celebrate and appreciate ourselves and others every day of our lives; but we really do need reminders in this day and age, even if it's just one day out of the year.

I remember hearing it last year but that was the first time I heard about it! I don't really care for another holiday. There's Mother's Day, Valentine's Day, plus my birthday is coming soon. I think that's enough when it comes to those "girly holiays." But I understand the significance of it. What if there was a "Men's Day?" I wouldn't really be too thrilled about it to tell you the truth. lol.

My college's women's center pairs up with the international studies dept. for international women's day events. They hand out flowers at various locations on campus to women who walk by throughout the day.

Women's rights are interpreted, expressed, and acknowledged differently across different countries and cultures. Not all women in the United States have an "open life." What is considered "open" for other cultures may be considered "closed" or "suppressed" to Americans, and vice versa.

When I lived in China, Woman's Day was celebrated every year No school every year on 03/08. I bought my mom flowers every year on this day It was all really cute.

Not until maybe 15 years ago did Mother's Day start showing up in marketing in China. I guess you could consider 03/08 as a form of Mother's Day before that. Now promotions/marketing for both days

I never understood why men also got the day off when it was "Woman's Day".

I feel like "Men's Day" is celebrated everyday. It's nice to have an entire day set aside to celebrate the accomplishments that women have done. After reading up on the history of it, I don't think it's a Hallmark holiday at all. If it was, there would be a lot more attention shed on it, and it would be more well known.

I've never heard of it before but I'm glad we have it. Women deserve a holiday and a history month. Every month is "Male History Month". How often are women mentioned in history books as being anything other than a famous person's wife?

...I get that magazine, but I never realized there was an actual holiday called 'women's day'. =3 Kind of nice to know really.
Though I do agree that there's a few too many sort of 'holidays'. We usually just stick to celebrating the main ones like Christmas, Halloween, Thanksgiving..etc.

I've heard of it. It's not meant to be another commercialized holiday to sell greeting cards. It's more of a day of recognition...similar to Black History Month.
