How do you decide on what to give to people?

Contributor: invisiblehat invisiblehat
I like giving gifts, but occasionally I struggle on thinking of what to give to people. To remedy this, I've started carrying around a notebook with gift ideas for people - I just jot down ideas whenever they say something offhand that leads me to think "oh, I should get them that." So far it's worked fantastically, except for the people I don't know as well but feel obligated to give a gift to. They tend to get "generic" gifts.

How do you decide?

I tend to go with the things I know they have an interest in or what I know them from...for example I know this girl that always gets me a present for every occasion form a book club, so I make her a basket with tea, biscotti and a gift card for a book.

I usually go with something practical that I know they could use and appreciate.

If they have a wishlist I might use that, or sometimes I just spot something and think it would be nice for them.

I really like to ask. I don't like generic gifts -- giving or receiving.

If I don't already know their tastes or what they've expressed interest in in the past, I ask directly. Although this can be an exercise in frustration because there are some people who are taught to say "Oh, nothing at all! Don't do anything for me!" because of some misguided belief of needing to be modest.

Those people get ugly Christmas socks.

I do pretty much the same thing. And sometimes i just see something -like my boyfriend, he's started working so he's making lots of money, and his wallet is a cheap on that's in pieces. so i bought him a Coach wallet this year. =D Stuff like that i do a lot.

I usually give people art. Fairly generic, but it has a huge span. A lot of my friends have said they don't get art from anyone else, and since I have good taste/a good eye at figuring out what they like, it's nice to get something else to liven up their homes each year.

Either I ask them what they want and they tell me, I get something that I KNOW they'll like, or I get them a gag gift.
