Borders is Closing

I meant to say "I have an eReader which will NOW be useless." What are the poor schmucks who have a KOBO supposed to do?

You should still be fine, right? I thought only the kindle had proprietary filetypes---I was under the impression that all the others were fungible. Can you buy them through the computer (from B&N) and download them onto your Kobo?

YES!

All of those add it up, esp the music/movies. Who would really pay $10-$15 MORE for a CD or DVD? I hate paying $19.99 for a movie, knowing it'll be $9.99 in a year or so.

I wouldn't have any idea how to do so. I've attempted to call Borders a number of times, (they NEVER pick up their phone) I've talked to people at KOBO, who told me I can ONLY load files from KOBO on my machine (they also said, just a month or so ago, I "shouldn't worry about Borders. They're fine.")

The REASON I wanted an eBook was so that I could just use the machine to order books directly. This going through the computer, going through 20 different steps, just to download a single book ISN'T what I wanted an eBook for. I may as well go to the library and get a real book. It's actually less work.

Having to have access to my computer to download the books kind of nullifies the convenience of having an eBook, IMO. Don't you think? I don't own a lap top. We have a single 6 or 7 year old desk top, on the first floor of our house, with internet connection, miles from my bedroom. My bedroom is where I want to load and read the books.

I'm sorry, I'm really upset about this. My best Christmas gift from My Man (although he did NO investigation on it, or he would have gotten me a Nook or a the Amazon one) and it's not usable the way I wanted to use it. For all intents and purposes, not usable at all.

Really the only inconvenience is having to load them from the computer. While you're on the computer anyway, you load them onto your reader, and then read wherever you want to. The reader only needs to be attached to the computer long enough to transfer the files. My eReader didn't take very long to do it. Being able to do it right from the reader would be more convenient, but it shouldn't be tremendously difficult or inconvenient to load them while you're already doing stuff on the computer.

I don't like Amazon moving closer to a complete monopoly.

I got an email from Borders this morning stating that Kobo itself is taking over the ebooks from Borders. If this applies to you, you might want to check it out.

I hope I can still get books from them. But, in order to order directly from KOBO, again it's going to their site, ordering, waiting for it to get loaded onto Adobe Digital, then attaching your eBook to the computer, going back to Adobe Digital then about 3 more steps, then you time out and start over.Maybe if you're lucky, you get the book, IF the Digital works on your 5th try. I HATE IT!

I've done it a few times and it sucked. I wanted an eBook so I could order directly from the eBook itself. I can order from my bed, while on vacation, while stuck in a waiting room. I don't want to load it onto my ancient computer then go through 1000 steps to get what I was TOLD would be a one step process directly from the eBook.

I'm sorry, I got a product and THEN they changed the rules. I don't like it.

I want to take the freaking KOBO back to Borders, but we don't have the receipt. It's really dishonest of them to promise something and then later say, "Oh, you have to do it in a different and really difficult way." I'm NOT good with computers. I just want to do what they told us I could do; order books ON my eBook directly.

It's worth ditching the piece of crap and losing the $100.00 just to avoid the bullshit.

For someone like me, with limited computer skills, it's just easier to go to the library. I haven't ordered a book from KOBO in about 3 or 4 months, because of the hassle. It's not worth having a product that I'm not going to use.

...the story of Borders' failure with technology.

I'd hurry up and try to unload it on someone and get a Nook Color (or any of the new tablet computers). You can get reader apps for free if you know where to go/whom to ask.

This has been coming for a while. I was in there a like 2 years ago and got talking to an employee there for like an hour and she told me they were about to close that store and all of the ones like it that were in the malls and such in my area. That only the one large store would remain in the area in a few months and she was right. I prefer B&N personally Borders always looks sad when I go in there why I do not know.

It is so sad there are so few bookstores around. Unless it is a used book store and those are far an few between. I end up buying 90% of my books online I do not know what I will do when I have kids. Drive 20 mins to the B&N for children's story time.

I'd love to do so, maybe not on someone else, but I'd still like to ditch the damn thing.

My Man isn't a huge reader. He knows I spend time at Borders, so he thought all the eReaders were the same. If he had done an internet search or even asked my step mother (who works at a book store) he would have known to steer clear of the KOBO.

It would have been rude on Christmas morning to say, "Thanks, but you should have gotten me a Nook or the Kindle."

Unfortunately, I'm not good with computers and have no idea where to get those apps or who to ask.

I'm sorry this turned out so poorly for you. You may want to try to put it on Ebay in late August, before the start of the school year. Parents go looking for an inexpensive deal because many schools now require students to have an e-reader. I don't know how exactly the readers are used in school (i.e. if the teacher's load or email the materials for the students) but I know that in NYC, they are not particular about the brand. My friend had a meltdown last year because she couldn't find one for under $120 for her son. She would have jumped at one priced $50 on ebay.

Someone with a faster/newer computer would probably not be as frustrated by connecting the KOBO to a computer as you are. FWIW, KOBOs are pretty cool since they don't have all the DRM crap that Kindles do.

I committed to buying used books as much as possible a few years ago, so it's been forever since I shopped at a Borders or B&N. I had noticed that all of the ones in my my town and down in my hometown have closed within the last year.

That's unfortunate I much rather have a book in physical form rather than an eBook. It is just so much more comfortable. I would not be surprised that within decades physical forms of books will be obsolete and everything people read will be in digital. I think this will happen regardless of how well book stores make their business decisions.

Sad! Borders has been my favorite store for a long time! I really liked their rewards program and the way they organized their merchandise. I'll have to make a trip to one of their locations before they close. :[

All of my books from now on will probably be coming from Amazon, though I'll certainly miss wandering into a bookstore and finding new and exciting things. I'm not a fan of B&N.
