You can catch up on the seasons through Netflix Instant which has all seasons to date available for streaming.
As to why it's my favorite...well, that's hard. It's a show that is very much focused on family, the love and lengths one would go to for each other. Focused on two brothers (Sam and Dean), it has followed them through angst, pain, and events that would stretch even the most patient person to their breaking point, but above all it's always about the unbreakable bond of brotherhood. Nine seasons and counting, if that tells you something about the quality and constant ability to surprise and build on a mythology that is amazing.
