Have you found a rare or valuable book by accident?

I was at the library book giveaway last week and picked up a few books I really wanted to read or that I found very interesting. I was curious about a book I picked up, I could not recall this book being one of J.R. Tolkein's novels and decided to check it out. It is a first edition volume of "The Silmarillion". Imagine my surprise when I found the exact copy of my book valued at between $300-400. I am keeping it, but was amazed at the fact of how valuable it is, that it was published post humously but was his first novel and that it was just given away by someone at the free book giveaway!!!

Anyone else get lucky? Do tell!!!

Wow! It's really cool that you found a Tolkein 1st edition!

I've never been quite so lucky. I almost bought a rare Metallica CD in a used CD shop once. Another guy in the store was overjoyed when I decided to leave it at the counter — he said it worth hundreds of dollars!

Yes! I recently found a first edition (printed in 1903? Sorry, don't have it in front of me right now) of Freckles by Gene Stratton Porter. It was one of my favourite books growing up, and I flailed like a Muppet when I found it!
