Price of seeing a movie in a theater?

Contributor: Ash1141 Ash1141
In my rural town, a movie ticket is $9. Now if you want a medium popcorn and med drink, that will cost an additional $10. $19 + tax for a snack, drink and a 2 hour show. Is that crazy? Do you feel going to a movie is a "cheap" night out or date? I used to think that way. Now it's way to expensive. Especially if you bring your children with you. It used to be a fun place to go and spend time at. Now it's a once in a blue moon treat, atleast for my family. What are your feelings on this?

It used to not be so bad when $10 would get you a ticket and a drink and maybe a small snack. But now the ticket is at least $10, and snacks and drinks are super expensive too. At this point, I'll go to the movies if I have passes for tickets and only have to pay for snacks, if we even get any.

I'm not really much on theaters, mostly because they're so expensive. I'll go if there's something I really want to see, but that's pretty hit-or-miss too.

Yea, tickets are expensive. That's why I often choose a matinee on a weekend or a good deal. I live near Baltimore and Annapolis, so there's usually a good offer. Bmore, like many cities, offer free screenings once a year. Certain Annapolis theaters give cheap tickets at night, but usually during the middle of a week like Tuesday.

I never buy snacks. I didn't even realize how expensive they were until I saw a friend of mine buy a drink and a popcorn. 10 bucks for a soda and popcorn is outrageous, but then again it's the only way for a theater to make profit. They hardly make any money off ticket sales.

Movie ticket costs doesnt go to the theater it goes back to the production people of the movie. So all the theater gets in profits is whatever they make on snacks.

I go to matinees to cut the cost of tickets down in half. It really helps, we pay about 11 bucks for the two of us that way, instead of 22 dollars.

I think I read once that we have one of the cheapest "first-run" theaters in the nation. Our matinees are $3.25 for all ages and our "evening and weekend" prices for adults is $5.75. We're a Cinemark theater.

I'm so psyched because I just found out that Courageous actually will be at our theater this weekend - our town is so small I didn't think we'd get it here.

YEAH!

3.25! I'm jealous.

What time does your matinee end? Where I'm from, matinee ends at 4:30pm. It used to be 5.

the PTA out here has a kids movie program. Its like $8 for 8 or 10 kids movies. All newer ones, ones that might just be ending its theater time and going to DVD. But for $.80 a movie per kid, cant beat that. As far as movies for us adults, I have not been in so long. I dont remember what I paid for a ticket, but I know it was so much that I never went back.

Movies are just too much here for me to bother with.

Just too expensive to bother with, except for maybe once or twice a year, and then the price just ends up being regrettable half the time.

An adult ticket costs about £10 for my local cinema, but the food isn't as expensive as for others on here, with just a couple of pounds, and even then some think that's too much.

There's a theatre on my campus that gives students tickets for free or around 2 dollars. Which is nice. But the movies are usually old or like, stuffy independent/foreign films, which are cool every once and a while for me but not ALL the time.

Most of the time I try and avoid major theatres.

There are two local theatres in my home town that I love. One is a single screen place with great beer and the best popcorn in town. They usually have the best movies/and most unique movies, though they only show one at a time. Its always the movies that you read all about being hilarious or otherwise fabulous, win all sorts of awards but tend to get shafted by the mainstream. The other is a theatre owned by an indian couple that shows similarly unique and fabulous movies in addition to bollywood, which is tons of fun. Also great beer and fresh baked goods. I don't mind dropping 20 bucks on a ticket and some snackage at those theatres.

The night movies are $9 and matinees are $5 in the big city I live in.

I think the prices are still sky high. A bottled water $4 they have got be kidding. I can't drink carbonated beverages. I was hoping they did free water like restaurants do. No such luck, I was so shocked that a bottled water was $4!!

I think they are 8.50 here. We hardly ever go to the theater. It's so much cheaper to rent them at home.

I think they are $8-$9 here. I love going to see an action movie in theaters. I think it's kind of expensive, but I see it as a treat also. I don't do it all the time.

Tickets where I live are about $11 a piece, and that's not including drinks or popcorn. I go to the movies maybe once every 4-5 months because it's just too expensive for a movie that's probably going to be lame anyway.

They're around 10-11 dollars where I'm from. When I went to Mexico, I paid $4.50 for a ticket.

I remember watching the prices go up years ago (I was slightly horrified when they raised the price of the $2 theater in downtown NY). It's a shame, but for a good movie I want to see I'll spend the money.

About $9 in my suburban town at the normal movie theater and $15 at the fancy one. There used to be an old single screen theater downtown where you could see a double feature for about $5, but they don't show new releases any more. There's also a theater that shows recent movies after they've ran for a few months for $3. Concessions are still outrageous no matter where you go.
