My daughter is a fan of both shows - I'm a buffy/angel fan and we BOTH love Supernatural.

Supernatural is ... sort of a fantasy take on Doctor Who with even more magical elements than Buffy and a big dose of Twilight Zone surrealism thrown in. Earlier seasons had really tight writing (I don't know about recent seasons since I haven't seen them yet) and excellent storytelling.

Give a random episode a chance. People's tastes are so different - you might fall in love with it, you might hate it.

Heroes has to be one of the greatest supernatural shows but if you want along the line of Dr. Who torchwood and x-files

Supernatural, seasons one through five, definitely. The writing and plot were impeccable. I don't recommend anything after that, though. They turned the show backwards and upside-down in Season six, and it was so incomprehensible it wasn't funny. (The original storyline ended with season 5...)

I'm a Doctor Who fan, can't stand Buffy though...

Yes. I happen to like all three series. I would also suggest Due South. It's a Canadian buddy cop show that also has a lot of magical realism. It can be very playful and surreal (like Dr Who) but also does emotional episodes very well.
