Are you a foodie?

Contributor: Lady Evyl Lady Evyl
Well I have a food blog older then my Domme blog (sorry no revealing it here). I participate in several online cooking challenges. And I run a foodie dinner group with over 250 members in my city.

So yeah I would call myself a foodie

I love to cook, but baking is probably my absolute favorite!! My friends and family always seem to love whatever I happen to be baking. I think I've got what they call "natural talent".

I'm a fucking Domestic Goddess. People have been known to orgasm at my table, from just tasting my food. (And, no, that isn't an aphorism. My food is THAT good!)

My Man is also a good cook. He thinks he's better than I am, but not only am I better, I am more consistent, and nobody every cries at the table from too much hot peppers in their food when I cook.

Hee hee. We're just having BLTs tonight. I can do you some bread, though. (Which I need to get my ass up and into the kitchen if it's to be ready for dinner.)

I like to cook, but I am not sure if I am a very good cook. My significant other is very nice and not very picky, so I don't really know how he feels about it. He says he'd rather eat the lunches I pack him over the food where he works (an upscale kind of grocery store with a good deli).

We eat almost vegan in this house and I make a lot of Southeast Asian, Middle Eastern foods. Healthy and interesting foods make us feel good and happiest, so our grocery bills have been going up a bit. But it is worth it.

I wish I could bake. I am terrible at it. It is alchemy too advanced for me. I can kind of make something decent from a box, though.

I loooove eating out. I have lunch out maybe twice a month, dinner once. My favorites are locally owned Thai, Lebanese and Indian restaurants.

Alura, the thing about baking is that, as you said, the alchemy needs to be understood before you can play with it.

My advice (and my mother can't boil water, so I had to teach myself how to cook when I moved in with My Man many years ago) for baking is to get a GOOD basic baking book. Something like The Fannie Farmer Baking Book or The Joy of Cooking and follow the simple baking recipes first, ONE STEP AT A TIME. Don't vary anything, as the chemistry and physics of baking is more complicated than regular cooking. Do this for about 3 months, at least every other day or so, and you'll get the idea of how to bake well. THEN you can attempt more advanced recipes and change SOME things (but not the leavening, starch, egg, fat ratios unless you really learn how to do it) around.

I did this, and became a fantastic baker. All learned on my own, from books. It takes some times, and carefully reading the recipes all the way through TWICE before you even take the flour out of the cabinet. I found this the best method, especially if you don't have someone to teach you and are on your own.

Good luck.

Thanks!

I have a few cook books, but the one that goes into the most detail is Ye Olde Betty Crocker. I found problems with a few of the baked recipes, though. Last time there was a unsatisfactory result, for the second batch I adjusted what I thought was the problem: success! I don't do eggs, so I am hoping to find a good vegan cookbook one day. I might bake with free range eggs for my partner, though. Or others. When I make a decent cake or batch of cookies it takes us forever to eat it!! So even a weekly experiment might be too much! But yes, I need to come to understand that chemistry and practice. When it cools down, I will try to bake lots more.

I can cook if I try hard enough. And hubby loves some of my foods. I just hate to cook. Always have. I've gotta learn to cook more though for once I have children.

I love cooking. Just yesterday I made slow cooker applesauce, apple cinnamon muffins, and apple cheddar pizza. If you're sensing a theme, it's because we went apple picking recently and came home with nearly 30 pounds of apples!

I will take photos while cooking and then blog about it as "Cooking With TechyDad." I'm definitely not a pro-chef, but I'm pretty good most times.

Oh and I'm guessing the "AB level" refers to Alton Brown who is amazing. As a geek myself, I love watching Alton geek out over food. I'd love to get the chance to meet him one day.

I'm a trained pastry chef that specializes in breads. I can do cakes but it's not my true love. Ah man, give me a good loaf of bread any day and I am a happy girl. I can see how bread is seen as a religious item, you take very basic items and with it create a whole new item. You bring yeast back from (near)dead and it brings life to your work.

I've found that as much as I love bread there is not a huge out cry for it since most people see happy with white bread. So I'm studying more and more of cakes and other pastries. I hope some day to have a bar that serves fruity drinks and cupcakes as a place where women can come to relax after a long day and unwind.

I would have voted the first option, but, alas, I just don't have the time in my schedule (or the money) to really indulge in my gourmet cooking pleasures. I love it when I am able to though! I have a wonderful and huge cookbook collection authored by various gourmet chefs!

I was kind of stuck between "make pretty much anything" and "I make a mean _____". I absolutely love to cook, though mostly I enjoy baking cakes and desserts, and making candy. I can make a couple of things really well by now, but sometimes more complicated recipes take me a few run throughs. Lately I've been trying to practice cooking without recipes, where I can put together whatever's in my fridge. Sometimes it works, and other times it definitely doesn't!

I love baking bread! There are a lot of Artisan Bread Shops where I live (suburb outside Chicago) so there is a lot of work for bread/pastry chefs, I think. Sub sandwiches are big in Chicago, and every other store has their own bread. Even our grocery store has an Artisan Bread Bakery. It's such a simple, beautiful, fulfilling food. It's sad the people in your area don't appreciate it. I buy yeast in the BIG jar!

I also love cakes, cookies, brownies, muffins, egg puff (Popovers, German Pancakes, Yorkshire Pudding etc.) And that stuff that you cook the eggs and the butter and the flour in a pan, and then pipe it into cream puffs or eclairs. Why can't I think of what that is called. Everybody eats my cream puffs before I even get to fill them.

Keep up the good baking.

Oooh, pate choux, I love making cream puffs and eclairs. I normally make a full size batch and freeze them so I can use the shells when I need to.

There's a growing trend in the area of artisan breads, but it's easily over powered with the half dozen cupcake only bakeries. Don't get me wrong, I love a cupcake as much as the next girl, but what a cheap excuse for a bakery, only cupcakes? What about a lovely fruit tart so I can lie to myself and say "see, there's fruit on it, it must be healthy!" or other lovely pastries? Not to mention it's like 2/3's frosting on all these cupcakes, too much sweet for me.

I love, love, LOVE cooking . I hate, hate, HATE cleaning Therefore, I rarely cook to my potential because I can't get my family to pitch in with the cleanup.

I also only really like to cook if I have a enough time to prep an elaborate meal. In the spring I made a homemade butternut squash ravioli that was AH-MAZING. I even made the pasta. And the butter sage sauce. I loved making it, just hated making the pasta... I'm no good at it and I don't have a Kitchen-Aid with the correct accouterments. Tonight is homemade pizza night. Was supposed to be tacos, but I ran out of time. It's Glee Rocky night.

And I would vote the "chef" category, except that I wouldn't akin myself to Alton Brown. Maybe Rachael Ray (in cooking style, not personality... she's weird). I love to cook and I'll go off a recipe a little, but mostly I create my own.

Yeah, pate choux! Thank you, I couldn't remember the name of it. I love that stuff. (Sounds filthy, "everybody eats my cream puffs." LOL!)

I love cupcakes, too, but you are right about the frosting. Too much. I like the cake part better. And, I hate "one thing only" bakeries, I like to be able to choose a variety of things.

Chicago has a large Italian Polish and Latino populations, so we have SO many traditional bakeries. There are even bakeries in China Town, with stuff you don't see anywhere else. We live in an area where a lot of Latino people live, so we get a lot of Latin Pastries (in Chicago pastries are called "Bakery." "Hey, yous want some Bakery from Ruzickis?") and it's all so yummy. I love Mexican Sugar Buns.

Rachael Ray is totally weird. But I do like the fact that she is, I believe, the only cook on Food Network that uses her own brand of cookware on the show. That, I admire. It shows she stands behind her product. If only I had the money....

P'Gell: Pate a Choux is so yummy! And so easy to make! At one of the first culinary classes I attended, our professor showed us how to make Pate a Choux, creampuffs and those Mexican fried sticks of cinnamony goodness (I can't remember the name for the life of me).
