Are you comfortable eating alone at a restaurant?

Contributor: Wicked Wahine Wicked Wahine
I live alone & don't have a partner or currently date. And I have no problem being alone, I enjoy it for the most part. I know that some people do not like to go to a restaurant alone & feel uncomfortable eating alone with everyone watching them. It's never bothered me, but I would like to know what you think!

How about going to a movie by yourself?

I don't mind it, but I need a book or magazine to occupy me, else I'm just sat there twiddling my thumbs and staring into space while I wait for my food.

I've lunched alone, because I was at work and new at my job and there was a restaurant right there. I've never done a sit-down dinner by myself, but if I were single I might. I wouldn't want to pass up a yummy restaurant meal if I were single, couldn't score a friend for the evening and had a craving.

I have never considered going to a movie by myself, which is sort of weird considering it's not like you have a lot of conversation with your friend or date or whoever. Plus, I love movies. I tried to get my husband to go see Magic Mike with me, but he wasn't biting. I threatened to go alone! That's as far as that got though...ended up seeing it later, not alone.

I've done it but much prefer to have someone join me.

I don't mind either. However, if eating alone, I like to bring a book.

It's fine. I don't always bring a book - I would say about half of the time.

I don't like eating alone because I do feel like everyone in the restaurant is watching me. I've never been to a movie by myself.

I've never been alone at a restaurant, and I don't think I would be comfortable at all! Kind of paranoid... But. I would totally go to the movies alone

I don't mind doing either by myself. I take a good book and have dinner with it.

You know what I hate, as a woman dining alone? The assumption that you couldn't possibly be there alone by choice. You must have been stood up or brought the book as camouflage & you're there to pick up someone! People DO stare at you & I let them stare! And I have perfected my, "leave me alone" demeanor, so I have little trouble anymore with drunks hitting on me.

I don't think I've ever gone to the movies alone, but it's certainly something I would do if I thought about it.

I'm not sure I would go to a nice restaurant by myself, but I've been to many casual places on my own (especially those that offer free wi-fi). My husband and I share a car, and sometimes our work schedules overlap so that there's 2 hours between the time I drop him off and the time I have to be at work. It's not really worth going all the way back home since we work across the street from each other, so I'll usually find someplace close and grab some lunch or a coffee and look at my laptop until it's time to go. I never feel uncomfortable doing that.

I don't think I would want to go to a large restaurant by myself, simply because I don't like crowds. But I would eat in a cafe or something by myself.

Movies I could do, eating out not really want to eat alone. It all depends on the setting, like if its around lunch maybe.

I travel for business - so it happens fairly often.

I've dined alone many, many times and it doesn't bother me at all. I used to travel for business and almost always dined alone at least twice a day on those trips. Now, my wife goes into her office and I work from home; sometimes I go out to eat by myself even now. I do like having something to read, or to watch.

I've also gone to movies alone and lots of other stuff. I've spent up to a week by myself on backpacking trips in remote areas. I think I'd go seriously crazy if I DIDN'T get a lot of time by myself!

I don't mind either. I thought I would but then did it a few times, and I don't mind it. Of course, I rarely do.

I don't really mind, though I do like to have a book or something to keep me occupied. I don't think I've ever gone to the movies by myself.

Yeah and sometimes I prefer it that way as long as no one comes along to bother me. I am one of those people to where others feel like they have to introduce themselves...

I don't like restaurants or movies so I only go when others force me too. I can go sit and read and drink a beer on a patio alone though.

I don't mind most of the time. I am used to going it alone for things, but I can't say I do it that often. Moreso if I am travelling.

I kind of love it -- though I do tend to bring a book or magazine or something to keep me a bit of company. (Or, these days, a phone or tablet)

If you sit at the bar, it's a lot easier & if you want, people are more amenable to chatting. Sometimes, I'm in the mood for interaction & sometimes I want to be left alone.

I'd love to dine alone at a restaurant. It's been a long time since I have, though. I like doing things solo, but with a husband and a toddler, it's a rare thing.
