Can porn cause a good man to commit rape?

Contributor: misterazor misterazor
do you think that porn, or visual sexual stimulation in any form, can cause a man to commit a sex crime under any circumstances? i feel that it's either inside of a person to do something so horrible, or it is not...and witnessing images of sexual nature cannot change a person's innability to do such a thing.

but, what do you think?

I've been there -- with both pornography playing a role in my being raped, so I'm probably not the best person to answer that. I will say that I do not believe pornography makes a person rape, but it absolutely desensitizes them, and well, I guess it just depends on how sensitive they were in the first place. I don't know. I only wish I had more answers for my own self.

no, porn is meant to entice someone, to let them live out their fantasies buy watching them, if they rape it was in them the whole time and not because of porn..

No. I like watching anal sex, but I don't ever think about having it.

Usually the desire for rape is already imbedded somewhere deep inside of a person some time before they do it.

I don't believe so, I feel you would have to feel that way already.

Definitely not. People always blame media way too much for people's actions. Rape has been happening since long before the invention of porn. Maybe there has been a case at some point of someone thinking they can get away with rape because of porn, but it's definitely not a common thing.

I think I've read stats showing that porn actually lowers the chance of rape, in most cases. Widely publicized cases are usually the ones where the rapist says porn gave him the idea or enticed him. (I believe it was Ted Bundy who was one of the first to say this to reporters.)

Ozzy Osborne sings a song that has a line in it, "I tell you to enjoy life, I wish I could but it's too late". Unfortunately for the parents of the child who killed himself after listening to the song--it was not the song that told him to 'end your life'....suicide was already a plan of action for that child, put in place long before he listened to that or any other song.

Same thing goes with rape. It is a need to overpower, dominate and humiliate the victim. Rape is not usually a sexually driven crime, as much as it is a rage and power driven crime. There are plenty of people who need to point fingers and blame something other than the fact that the people who commit rape are flawed and need immense psychiatric help. Unfortunately, it leaves the victim feeling flawed and vulnerable. Not only because of the sexual abuse committed, but also the loss of power over their own body, mind and life. Unfortunately--society also places the blame with the victim, not the perpetrator.

No--porn does not make a good, decent person commit rape. Neither does wearing sexy or flattering clothing make a victim 'ask for it'.

No. I don't believe porn causes rape any more than I believe that violent video games cause school shootings.

No. Cultural propaganda is one of the things that can cause a person to believe it's somehow okay to rape someone, but porn is such a tiny tiny portion of that propaganda, and it's not even the worst of it.

I cannot even imagine that to be plausible. Other than in the minds of those individuals who want to demonize porn. True or not, they will grasp at anything to justify their intolerant views.

Porn doesn't cause someone to rape anymore than Grand Theft Auto video games causes someone to steal cars. It's just a way for rapists to scapegoat.

Absolutely not. Rape really has nothing to do with sex. It's about power.

That makes absolutely no sense and it sounds to me like it was devised by the same "morals groups" that say MW3/GTA turn people into murderers.

Absolutely not. Rape generally has nothing to do with sex or a sexual drive. It's completely about power, rage, and violence.
