Can you drive stick?

Yes, I can drive a stick.

I can also drive a tractor trailer, back a schoolbus through a cloverleaf pattern obstacle course, and parallel park a four horse trailer. Plus I can hotwire a tractor, break into a car in under a minute, and do any car repair short of rebuilding the transmission.

I had some extra time on my hands one summer.

I drove stick for years, though I currently have an inherited automatic. I prefer stick but where I live it can be a hassle. Automatic transmission does seem much more popular, especially in the U.S. I remember when I was living in Europe and taking road trips with American friends. I constantly got stuck doing the driving because no one drove stick and automatics were impossible to rent.

I would love to learn. When I asked my mom if she'd teach me in her car, she said that I didn't need to learn. She did teach my brother, though. I was looking before at getting a manual transmission car, but it was too old for me to get a loan on. I suppose some day I will learn.

I have drove everything, up to 13 speed truck. The truck took awhile to get used to as you have to double clutch, but no problem.

The only thing I have a hard time with is downshifting. If you're on the highway going 75 mph and you pop the clutch and start to break for traffic and you don't stop but slow down, I never know what gear to put it into as the car is starting to speed up and get it into gear. I always grind stuff when I do this.

The worst thing My Man ever did when I was driving; we were coming home from my brother's house, he lives about 40 miles from us, late at night. My Man was drunk (my brother is a bad influence, My Man is a bad influence, put them together, you get really drunk men) so I HAD to drive. (I never drink.) He didn't "like" the way I was down shifting and he thought I should be in a different gear than I was while I was crusing along at about 80 mph. He grabbed the stick and shifted into Overdrive and I DIDN'T have my foot on the clutch. I rarely scream at him if we are not fighting, but I did then! I didn't let the truck stall, but damn, we were on a dark country road, it was foggy, I was booking along at 80 and he drunkenly grabs the gear shift.

I read him the Riot Act when we got home. He's never done it again.

I don't know how to drive stick, but I'd like to learn. I know nothing beats experience, but does anyone know of any websites that can help me learn?

Sorry - you don't learn to drive a stick on the internet. I guess the assumption is that you can do anything on the internet - not so in this case. Each car's clutch/shift combination and feel are different.

Driving a stick is like making love to a girl - use the same technique on different girls at your own peril!

I love my stick and don't want to get an automatic, unless I absolutely have to of course.

I'm kinda fan of driving and I love the feeling of total control over the car. I can drive a stick, I prefer to drive a stick, I even refuse to drive an automatic, it's just boring. I don't like driver assistance systems such as ESC, EBD or cruise control, I have enough skills to control a car and enough brains to avoid dangerous actions. I only want to drive a simple car with manual transmission and minimum amount of bells and whistles. My current car is a perfect match, but, sadly, it's rather old and I didn't find a replacement yet.

I can't drive at all I've been putting it off for ages, and no access to a car makes learning difficult...

I must learn in case of a zombie apocalypse!

I tried to learn a few years ago and stalled at a busy intersection with all the cars honking at me. I was so nervous and the drivers were upset so I just switched seats and haven't tried since. I'd like to learn, though. I just need to find a place that isn't so congested because that last experience was nerve wracking.

I've only ever driven auto. I don't really have a huge desire to learn manual, but if the opportunity came up, I wouldn't necessarily say no.

It's something you have to be in the vehicle, gauge the response and feel in order to do properly. You can't learn from written or verbal instruction alone. It has to be felt.

Yeah, similar to making love. Good analogy.

BF made me learn how to drive stick. I really prefer an automatic though. His first gear is so touchy and I kind of panic if I have to stop on a hill. I'm terrified I'm going to roll into the car behind me in his expensive car. It's really stressful.

I love driving stick. Since I learned how to when I was about 17, that is all I have driven. All of my vehicles right now are stick, and the only one in the future that might be an auto is our pickup truck for hauling.

Everything from a "Three on the tree" to a "13 speed with a brownie" Even a few "Auto-sticks" (VW stick shift with no clutch) I taught myself with my first car, a Ford Pinto. If I have a choice I will always buy a stick, 98% of the time. My last/current truck is a automatic, but that was so the wife could drive it while towing a trailer. I have come to like it but there are times I wish it was a stick. Four wheeling and driving in the snow are the times I miss it the most.

Automatics are too boring, plus I think having a manual forces you to not mess around with your phone as much and make you pay attention
