Cell Phone Usage While Driving

Contributor: ~LaUr3n~ ~LaUr3n~
I am trying to swear off texting while driving. I honestly believe it is even more dangerous than having a buzz while driving. I was curious to see how people feel about the laws, what the laws in their area are, and if they follow them.

When I am at home in Chicago all cell phone usage without a head set or hand free is illegal. The fine is huge and so I try to not do it unless in an emergency (exit fast approaching!). But where I go to college, the rules are less clear. You can be on the phone but not text. Since I'm not dealing with Chi-town hectic techno driving, I break the rules. I think the laws should be there, and that technology is creating more hazards in unexpected ways. I just wish I wasn't so hooked to texting! I used to hate it!

They JUST put the whole no cell phones at all unless it's an emergency law into effect. I hate driving. I hate hate hate it. I generally don't drive, unless I absolutely have to. I trip over my own feet when I walk, therefore I think me using a phone while I'm driving is an accident waiting to happen, lol. Seriously. I text all the time though, my bf doesn't text while driving because he rarely uses the cell phone, but he does talk on it while he's driving.

I don't drive (yet) but I don't even do this while riding my bike. And it's illegal to do that while driving here in CA.

I occasionaly text or call while driving and I never have an issue with it, maybe because I live in a rural area so there are never any cars around. my proble is with changing the song on the Ipod while driving for some reason that distracts me beyond reason.

Calling doesn't bother me as long as I have a headset, but texting is an absolute no-no. Like, absolute-absolute. I refuse to ride in cars with people who text. It's extremely dangerous.

As for laws, being on a cell phone, period, is illegal in Iowa if you're under 18. Texting was just recently made illegal for all ages.

Even though it's illegal to talk on the cell while driving here in Toronto, there's so many that do it. I can't get over how many still do and get away with it.

I don't talk or text when I drive. It's just not safe. On occasion, my wife calls me while she is driving. I will usually yell at her and hang up.

Nope! never! way too dangerous! And there are far too many dangerous drivers on the road for me not to be paying attention. seriously, other drivers scare the shit out me.

I don't call people when I'm driving, but I have a bluetooth hands-free system through the car radio, so if my cell phone rings I will answer it. I don't text that often, and I only text when the car isn't moving, like if I'm at a stop light or stuck in traffic. But I still shouldn't do it. It's a very bad habit!

Both are illegal where I live but calling is permitted using a headset, which I do. It so freaks me out to see people texting while driving!! Same for people talking holding the phone and also "talking" with the free hand!! Go figure!

The no driving without a hands-free law has been in effect in NJ for a couple of years now, and the no texting one went into effect last year I think? When I had a phone with just a regular number pad to text on and I could do it with one hand, I did text while driving, but now that I have a lengthwise Qwerty keypad, I can't do it with one hand, so I don't do it. I do talk on the phone while driving, but only on bluetooth and it's been that way for easily 5 years now. I'm still using the pink headset that matched my original pink Razr years ago - not worth the risk or the ticket if you ask me.

I don't even have a phone, because I don't find it necessary to have, plus it is entirely too expensive for me, although my husband has one right now. I don't believe in texting or calling while driving.

I DO NOT text while driving, I'm one those people who think it is very unsafe to do this! My husband does it and it drives me nuts cause he is literally all over the road! But I do call. Only texting while driving is illegal here. And as for the calling I have bluetooth built into my car, so I never really "use" my phone.

When I did have a car and commuted a lot, I would only talk on speaker because I thought it was illegal already! This was about 4 years ago or so.

Texting while driving? Sillydumb.

I call while driving but I put the call on speaker phone. I also don't dial while driving unless I am at a stop light. Calling is not illegal here but I still don't do it with my hand and ear to the phone because that's not safe if something were to happen where you needed both hands on the wheel. Driving is also always my number one priority so I will usually only talk to my husband or my mom while I'm driving because they know to expect slow responses if I am needing to concentrate on the road and they know sometimes I'll stop mid sentence if I need to.

I don't text while driving but I have texted or looked at a text while at a stop light. If I am not finished reading or typing when the light turns green then I put the phone down and I don't look at it again until another stop light. I know this is probably a dumb idea though since texting while driving is illegal and I would have no proof that I was only doing it at a stop light and not while driving if something were to happen. So, I only do it if it's a semi emergency (such as I need to know what is going on before I drive too far because I need to know where I am driving to or something) and I don't drive too often since I work from home and when we go out my husband usually drives so it's not too big of an issue for me.

I talk on the phone while driving but I do not text. To me it seems the same to be talking on the phone as it is talking to the person sitting next to you in the car.

Unless it's hands free, it's illegal here.

I do neither...(Heck I don't ever text at all...) Even hands free I'm generally not comfortable with while driving..

Oh i forgot to say, the one time I DID talk on the phone while on my bike... i somehow landed flat on my ass on the cement. Was still holding the phone tho!

I voted that I take and receive calls when driving. Hands-free devices are required in CA. I admit though, that I do this less and less as time goes on.

I use to answer every call - but now I'll let them go to voice mail unless I know it's very important.

I've also cut way back on the calls that I initiate.

I do make and receive calls while driving. I used to text all the time while I drove because it required only one hand and I never had to look at the phone, so I could concentrate easily on the road. This is not so with my blackberry, so I am way more uncomfortable, and tend to do it less because of that.

Where I live it is illegal to text while driving if you are under the age of 21.

It really pisses me off when I'm driving and I see someone dialing a phone or texting behind the wheel. To be fair though it pisses me off to be chained to a phone. In my opinion there is nothing short of a medical emergency that is so important it can't wait till I have turned off the engine of my car. Now it's not just that I'm a bitch, mind you, I watched Sigel driven off the road and into a telephone pole by a college girl who was texting with her friend about the totally life threatening problem of her bestest friends MAYBE breaking it off with her boyfriend of three days...mmhmmm that's the sort of thing I want to claim my husband's life, I mean it's so EARTH SHAKING! So that's the basis of my bias, still I can't claim I am sinless. At her age I was driving while smoking a cigarette, drinking a soda and eating a burger meal as I raced to my second job. I could have just as easily caused an accident I just got lucky.

I think we all take driving a bit too casually, sometimes it takes an accident to open our eyes.

I witnessed TWO separate accidents in which cell phone-using drivers ran over CHILDREN and killed them.

Just ... NO reason to be on the phone. Period.

Using cell phones in any way while driving is a huge pet peeve of mine, but I have made an occasional brief call while driving, usually when I'm lost and need to keep moving, but also need guidance.

I honestly dont know the local laws

I wont text back, ile read it and if its important ile call.

If I need to call Ile call someone when ime in my personal vehicle.

I drive a goverment vehcile and when ime in that I try not to use the phone at all unless its work or something important as I trually dont want to give that part of the goverment a bad rep for someone coming to conclusions when the name is printed right on the sides and back of the vehicle and gov plates

I put that it's illegal in my area, but it's not strictly illegal. There's an umbrella offense called "inattentive driving" that covers all that kind of stuff.

I tend to not text while driving (except maybe at a stoplight), but I will talk on the phone if I need to.

It's all highly illegal where I live. They are very strict and give out quite hefty fines. I don't agree with texting or talking whole driving (I guess if you use a headset it would be semi okay). I just think it's dangerous.

This (in my opinion) is a no brainer. Tere hav been studies and tests done that prove using a phone is more harmful then drinking while driving. The sad thing is, is that it's not taken very seriously at all. I like to put it like this. When you're driving you're the captain of the plane. You crash that plane and you can potentially kill dozens of people.
