We have a friend who's looking for a new apartment. Her landlord keeps raising the rent in her current one and she doesn't have any friends close by.

We've noticed that her process for choosing a place to live is VERY different from ours. She visits a place, sees whether it "grabs her" or not and decides yes or no on the spot. My wife and I took a much more systematic approach, both when were looking for a house, and before, when we were renting. We made a list of possible places, visited each one, wrote down the plusses/minuses of each, narrowed it down to a short list, and finally decided. Really, our process for houses/apartments is pretty much the same as I use for sex toys!

About the same as yours. I only go on personal visits when I've narrowed it down to "Now what the 'vibe' of this place?" Although cheapness has won out mostly, but that's due to finances, not choice.

we had a list of what we wanted going into the shopping process. And we went from there. I wanted a nice neighborhood, a house that had a layout which would work with our furniture, and a house that did not need much work done right away.

Narrow it down by key features (space/layout, location) then go through the shorter list and find the one that feels right
