I think that 'contests' can be a bit bias. I know when I've had contests before I am more likely to make a bias decision. It is human nature.

Most giveaways I do revolve around making them DO something concrete over a contest entry or a 'follow'.

I had a formspring giveaway hosted on my blog about a year ago that revolved around people asking me formspring questions. Each question gained an entry. It got a lot of entries, people still had to do something, but it wasn't based on creativity yet they still had to think/put forth effort.

Definitely make sure to use Rafflecopter. Non-biased, and it keeps track of entries so much better than doing it yourself.

Both are good, but I'd probably be more tempted by the giftcard unless it was a really awesome basket. I have so much stuff already and I've gotten so toy-snobby that one really good luxury toy would be more appealing than a basket of various mid-range stuff.

I'm a sucker for giveaways. However to make it fair, I think a random winner (via Random.org or Rafflecopter) is the better way to go. However if only one person enters, sure, go ahead and give away to that person, but only after the contest has ended just so people don't think it's rigged.
