Do you get "leg cramps" (Charlie Horse) muscle cramps, at night?

Bignuf Bignuf
In the last few months, hubby and I have both been up a few nights a week, with terrible leg cramps. We have both been checked and our calcium and potassium levels are fine. I drink a fair amount of water. Hubby is always very well hydrated (water bottle in hand at all times....old serious athlete habit).

There are a few blogs here, where people speak about the same issue.

How common is this? Any suggestions for stopping them from happening???

I get them occasionally and hated it, had to wake my husband up to massage my sore muscles.

I used to, but hardly ever now. I think actually the herbs I take, vitamins and himalayan salt has actually made a big difference in aches and pains (including Charlie horses!) that I used to have because I no longer do. No matter how much water I've drank, it's never been something that prevented them for me. I think himalayan (pink crystal) salt is really good for stopping them. My partner used to get them a lot too, but he consumes the salt as well as vitamins. Hard to tell which exactly may have caused them to stop especially with him getting them all the time, but one of them made a big difference.

I get them daily. This massager from EF link has helped me greatly to relieve them and prevent them. This is perfect for all over body massage and has so many great uses and attachments.
Stretching before and after bed is great plus exercise and nutrition.
Himalayan salt is good too but I think epsom salts(Magnesium sulfate) soak in bath is perfect for them everytime, plus you can supplement it as well.

I voted for Cody. He gets them all the time, especially after standing for a while or after we have some intense sex.

Stretching helps, and getting a massage does too. The best thing I had my patients do was to increase their water intake, water helps to flush out the toxins and crap in our blood. Coffee, soda, ice teas, and the like just add to the sludge. The increase in water will help a lot of people, but for those who still have problems, take a good calcium supplement. The best is a calcium lactate supplement from Standard Process, it's the most readily useable by your body supplement out there. The next level down is calcium citrate. All the rest are pretty much just garbage as far as I'm concerned. Calcium covers the active sites on your muscle cells that are responsible for causing your muscles to contract. If you don't have enough calcium, these sites become exposed and your muscles can cramp up on you, usually when you are relaxed and almost asleep. Since I started taking calcium on a regular basis myself, I have not had any more night cramps at all. Some people may need to add in a magnesium supplement as well. Magnesium is a mineral that's a natural muscle relaxant. I hope this helps.

Occasionally I do. Unfortunately I just wait for them to work themselves out through stretching.

I had a serious, awful leg cramp during the night -- I was having a dream and suddenly I woke to my calf muscle cramping so bad that it felt as if the muscle had slid off the bone. Truly the worst and most surprising cramp of my life
