Do You Have Fire Extinguishers & If So, Where Are They Located?

Contributor: Wicked Wahine Wicked Wahine
In a previous discussion I posted, Have you ever had to use a fire extinguisher for it's intended use?

Answers to that one made me regret not asking some additional info, so I am going to ask in a new discussion, (sorry about that, but didn't occur to me till too late to add to other discussion)!

So, do you have any fire extinguishers? How many & where do you keep them?

I have 6, one in each of the following locations:
1- kitchen near stove
2- garage
3- one in the car
4-upstairs in hall closet
5-in basement near dryer
6-1st floor master bedroom, next to my bed

They are relatively inexpensive, I would feel a complete fool for not having one if needed. And I certainly would not want to run to another floor, or room to get one. If they can stop a fire, fast, or just provide me with a few extra seconds to get out, then I'm all for it. I watched too many fires burn down houses in my old neighborhood where I rented a house. Most started in the kitchen & not one house had a fire extinguisher which could have stopped everything. When my extinguishers get old & need to be replaced, I'm going to let my nephews & niece use them to practice putting out contained fires, (if fire dept will let me), if not, they can pretend there's a fire!

I... don't know. I should ask my landlady about that. Thank you for reminding me.

Wicked Wahine, you sound like you are prepared for anything, good thinking!
Hmmm, let me think three in the garage. One each in the kitchen, bedrooms, basement. I one properly mounted in a previous car. Properly mounted is very important btw, in the event of a collision you definitely don't want an extinguisher flying around.
I think that I may need to pick up a couple more.

I don't have a single one. I have fire sprinklers (doesn't everyone?), so I am not sure I need an extinguisher on top of that . In case of fire I can just ran and grab one from a corridor, as I live in an apartment building.

We have one in the basement. I haven't had to use it since we've moved here years ago.

We don't have one, unfortunately. I keep thinking that we need one, but I always forget to pick one up. I think I need to pick one up tomorrow, because you just never know.

That's us! I should probably check them and see if they need to be replaced...

We have one in the garage, but we are in a tiny duplex so it isn't too far from anything. We should have at least one more.

I have several: one in the kitchen, one upstairs, one in my SUV, and two in the garage.

One day at Home Depot, I thought, gee, these are cheap enough, I wonder why we have to have smoke detectors, but not extinguishers, too? (This was for rental inspections) So, I thought about everything/everywhere I could need one for in the house. I already had one on each floor, but decided I needed the bedroom for sure, that's where I spend most of my time and the other's just made sense. Because I live alone, I wanted enough that one would always be close enough to reach even if I was all panicky & shaking, as I imagine I would be if I had a fire! I like to stack the odds in my favor, especially when there is so much in life you can't control for. That's why I also do lots of different prepper activities, so I can be as self-sufficient as I can & not have to rely on others as much.

Yep, I keep one in the kitchen. It's enough to put out any fire I should be putting out

I agree there are times you should not try and put out a fire, you should just get the heck out of there, but extinguishers can also give you a few extra seconds to get out of the building if you are other wise trapped by flames. I imagine this is most likely if you are awakened by fire & that's why I have one near my bed.

I just talked about the a week ago. We realized we didn't have one here at this apartment. We should get one for sure.

We have one in the stairwell (leads to the basement), which is right off of the kitchen.

I forgot to add in my other reply: Sounds like you are prepared for anything, as well! Looks like I might need more for the garage since I now have a little combo fuel outdoor stove thingy? May I ask why you have three there? I may need to reassess what I have/need!

I just got a new car a year ago & I haven't had the fire extinguisher properly mounted in it, but did in the last. In this car, I stuffed it in the back of the seat pocket & I better get off my ass & do something about it, thanks for the reminder! I really forgot about it - you're talking to someone who rarely drives, (had a car 13+ years & only had 120,000 miles on it).

@SourAppleMartini, Maybe those in apartments & dorms have sprinklers, but most individual houses don't have sprinklers. I would rather out a small fire, fast than have everything ruined from the water. I also believe in backups for my backups. What if the sprinklers never went off? If there's a fire & you need to get out, what if there's fire between you & the escape & others already took the extinguisher from the hall? Maybe having your own with you would give you a chance to get out? Considering they are cheap & last a long time, I'd get one, but I am not telling you what to do. Oh, in rentals in the States, you can often get a discount on rent for having fire extinguishers & if you have renters' insurance, they usually give you discounts for it as well.
