I haven't peed in a pool since I was like 9 and I saw a commercial for that stuff they put in pools to make it turn purple when urea is present. That effectively stopped that lol. Peeing in lakes and rivers is harmless to yourself.....unless you are swimming in the Amazon basin. There is a catfish in South America called a candiru that typically feeds on blood from other fishes' gills. Occasionally, the candiru will swim up the urethra of a mammal (including humans) as the animal is peeing in a river, and uses its spines to lodge itself inside the urethra.
Take home message: don't pee in rivers in the Amazon basin.
Personally, I don't pee in lakes and rivers because algae use the nitrogen in urine, and with enough people peeing in it, it can cause nasty algae blooms. In oceans, this is of no concern since the solution to pollution is dilution.
