i dont want one for a pet... i mean, okay maybe i do, but i won't get one just because i have cats. that would be mean!

never thought about that really! but you're right. the ones in the garage are grey and speckled. still damn cute though.

dont want to see them get killed by the cat that will come but... it's nature's way.

And one of the early posts displays what seems to be a dumbo (wide-eared) rat. Still adorable.

Rats, likewise, when you get past the tail, are extremely smart, interactive and loving pets.

Oh, goody! I get to give a lesson on tiny rodents! *is in happy mode*

As compared to mice, rats have proportionally longer noses and wider heads, as well as simply being bigger and more muscular. Once you've seen a rat and a mouse side by side (in pictures, please - the two don't usually get along) it's easier to see the difference.

Hamsters have shorter noses and wider heads than mice, and most have stubby tails and bulkier builds (Chinese Dwarf Hamsters look fairly mouse-like, out of the rodents most commonly seen in pet stores). Gerbils have a distinct head shape with a slight downward slope to their noses, long hind legs, and furry tails.

Though I forgot to mention that there are different species of mice with varying physical features. I was thinking mainly of domestic and house mice.

And for the listening and viewing pleasure of rat fans, I present this video about Hero Rats - rats trained to sniff out tuberculosis and land mines. This thread reminded me of them.

aw, that mouse on a mouse looks more like a hamster to me! hehe. i love rodents. i keep hamsters currently. i have two. i even enter them in shows, and they have won awards/medals (socal is the only place i know of with hamster shows other than the uk). i would love to have a mouse or a rat one day, but right now i don't have the space. the mice with the big ears are my favorite! i'd probably get into showing mice and rats, too.

I remember when I was in 6th grade my science teacher had two pet mice in the classroom, Cookies and Cream. One time my best friend got to take them home for the weekend, I spent the night over there so we could play with them. lol. As much as I think I hate mice, they are actually really cute!!
