Does anyone else over the age of 18 get acne?

Contributor: Coralbell Coralbell
I only get pimples occassionally now, but I still have other forms of acne: blackheads and closed comedones (tiny, skin coloured bumps on my forhead and cheeks.) I go to a dermatologist, so I have prescription acne treatments. I use a salicylic acid treatment during the day, and Differin (a retinoid) at night. Both have helped inmprove my skins texture. Being on birth control pills has also helped my skin become less oily.

Glycerin allergy, so most treatments I'm allergic to.

I am almost 21 and my face is always, and i mean always, broken out. Nothing the dermatologist gives me helps. I really don't know what to do. I hate it so much.

I get a breakout every now and then, usually before I get my period - I guess something do with hormones changing. I generally just let it go away on its own, but sometimes I'll spot treat with some mandelic acid.

Every once in a while I'll have a small breakout, but I always use a face wash daily and when I get a breakout I use a spot treatment on it.

I usually get a tiny break out right before that time of the month. My skin is very sensitive I use the new neutrogena natural face wash its pretty good.

Just an occasional zit. Sometimes I use these hydroxy pads. I think that's what they're called.

Oh yeah, I get breakouts. Mostly in the days just before my period, but other than that, I'll get the occassional larger pimple, along with plenty smaller ones under the skin. Especially on my forehead, around my nose, and on my chin (oily T-zone, uck.)

I do use a spot treatment, one of those works-in-four-hours dealies. Clearasil, I think.

And I sort of use a regimen daily. I have cleansing pads bu Neutrogena, and pads from...Biore, I think, that have salicylic acid in them. The pads are new, but they seem to be working pretty well. I had a massive breakout about four or five days ago, and it's pretty much all gone by now. (Except that I'm really bad for picking at my skin.) An untreated pimple will usually take at least a week, if not two, to go away on its own for me.

You could be over-washing. I did that when I had horrible skin - and my irritated, over-sensitive skin responded by breaking out even more.

I would suggest scaling back dramatically on what you're using. Find an all-natural soap (Dr. Bronner's, Kiss My Face, Desert Essence, and alba organics are all good), wash once a day, apply a light natural moisturizer, and only exfoliate three times a week. If you can stand having food on your face (plenty of people can't), make a mixture of oatmeal cooked in milk, mashed banana, honey, and vitamin E oil, smear it on your face for an hour once a week after exfoliating, then rinse with cool, clear water. Also, powdered milk can be nearly as good a mask as honey - spread it on your face nightly, then rinse off before bed. Buy bamboo pillowcases to replace what you're using now and make sure they're washed frequently.

I'm not a doctor and I don't play one on TV, but I've been doing natural skin care for 6 years, and I've gotten some dramatic results, not just on myself.

Not near as bad as when I was a teen, but along with my curse of a period I do sometimes get one of those hard, horrible cyst-like pimples that usually never pop or come to a "head". It just finally goes away. Then I have the occasional couple of small bumps that I don't do anythign to because they're barely there. When I was a teen I'd get the aswufl cyst-like bumps every single month and many times on the tip of my nose! Humiliating!

Ever once in a while I'll have a spell where I get several small breakouts, but I make my own solution and I use a lot of skin care products.

For pimples that have been pushed, popped or have broken skin, you can mix up a paste with epsom salt or sea salt. I find epsom works better. I pour a small bottled coke lid full of the salts then add only a couple tiny drops of water from my finger and mix with a q-tip. When it's dissolved and turned into a paste, I thickly cover any red blemish or pimple and leave it overnight. Many times it'll come to a head and the redness will disappear by morning.

Ever so often I'll use an exfoliant I make myself with these ingredients:

-Crushed multi-vitamin.
-Garlic/garlic clove - you can skip this if you want.
-Sea and epsom salts
-3 drops of tea tree oil
-Brown sugar
If you're having several breakouts you can also crush up an aspirin and mix into it too or you can make a paste with an aspirin similar to the way you make the epsom salt paste. This helps with redness a lot.

I have tons of skin care remedies! I post them regularly on my blog, but if I think of more I'll post them here if they'll help anybody. ?

The skin care products I use regularly are:
Elizabeth Arden's Green Tea exfoliant - daily.
Xtend Life's Active Day Cream - daily.
For blackheads I use Montagne Jeunesse's Clean-Up Mud mask. Used it just tonight. That is the best stuff for black heads! It totally unclogs them! I've never found anything to work for blackheads and for the $1 I spend on the mask (usually I get 2 uses from one packet) it's more than worth it!

Just a tip: I've heard extremely bad health problems being caused from using Accutaine! Not trying to scare anyone, but it's been linked to terrible digestive disorders and such. Has anyone had these problems with using it? Just wanted to put that out there just incase.

I would love to see your blog! I would usually recommend Mary Kay since I sell it and it does work, but I love natural remedies just as much!

Known Accutaine side effects include birth defects, liver toxicity, depression/suicide, and inflammatory bowel disease/colitis. It is often curative for most people, just not for me. It cleared my acne while on it, but it recurs every time and it's not a long term use option. That's why I've decided to not use it again since it is only temporary for me, not necessarily because of the side effects.

We know some young folks with BAD acne that did not respond to ANY over the counter treatment....but got AMAZING results going to get some serious treatment from a dermatologist. When all else fails folks, DO trust a real doctor to help. They DO have some real good options.

I still get acne sometimes. Especially during my time of the month. I have a cream that I use for it. It's not as bad as when I was a teen though.

Since I've joined the "over-30" club, I have more acne now than I ever had growing up! However, they are very small and tend to go away faster if I just leave them alone.

I never had acne but a lot of guys I know have them past 18 and they like to wash with hot water and use random products like toothpaste .

I get pimples on my face, and on my back when it is warm out from sitting at work. I just use a neutrogena face wash in the shower.

I dont wash my face a lot. once a day usually, before bed and switch out pillows a lot. i exfoliate though when i wash. I dont have a problem with food on my face at all, so i will try that. Benzoyl peroxide helps the weird bumps (not quite white heads nor are they black heads, just bumps) on my forehead, but not the breakouts i get.

I kinda want to go to a new dermatologist because this one couldnt even tell me what was wrong with the skin on my ear (dry skin she says, but her treatments do not work no matter how rigidly i follow them).

I get a few pimples now and then, but not too many. I don't normally use anything on them, most of the time they will go away on their own pretty quick. Though, sometimes I get those nasty cystic acne ones, which take forever to go away.

I rarely get pimples, but my skin is still very oily and I have tons of blackheads. My skin probably looks worse now than it used to when I was a teenager. And because it is incredibly sensitive I can't use any facial products formulated for acne.

Oh yes. I'm 26 and I deal with acne every day and I see no end in sight. I use 0.1% Retin-A every night on my face, neck and chest and Amlactin on my back, behind my ears and on my arms (I break out in all of these places). I wash my face 2x a day with Dove soap (the sensitive skin kind).

Oddly enough, I discovered coconut oil on my feet (yes feet, not face) cleared up my acne. I only break out if I skip 3 days in a row normally or 2 days in a row right before my period.
