Does it bother you when people cheat?

Contributor: .kaycat .kaycat
When people ask you to do all their work for them, are you okay with it or not?
Does it flatter you, do you just like helping out anyways?
Personally I don't care I like helping but if it someone relies on me every time, keeps cheating and doesn't try then it bothers me.

It does bother me, I usually put a lot of effort into what I do since I tend to be very much a perfectionist. When someone else wants to have me do their work and they take the credit for the prep work I have done...it is just wrong. I have had bosses many years ago that did this to me and as a result--I was the one passed over or penalized, not them.

I believe people should personally take care of the things they are responsible for.

It depends on what you mean by "do their work" - do you mean at school?

yes, I dislike cheaters. I do not help them. I am more then happy to help someone get ready for a test, or what ever they are trying to cheat at; but they have to ask ahead of time and prepare for whatever it is. it is all part of being responsible.

School is what I'm dealing with, but the question goes for anything you worked hard on and let someone else seem like they did the same. At work, school or just in general when you did something someone else took credit for.

Oh it ticks me off to no end when people take all my credit. I do enjoy working hard, and I love working with my hands, but gosh darnit, ask before you take all my credit.

As for school, I see it all the time and get very odd looks when I punish a student for cheating. But then, the school takes money from the kids parents and the kid is back in my class. But... I have a rule. Cheaters, copy cats get a zero in my class. So at the end of the term, when all the grades are in, I announce their grades, and put them on the wall with names and student number so everyone can see the grade. Still, it doesn't matter much as again, parents will just pay extra and their kid will pass.

And it pains me to see this as I teach many hard working and wonderful kids. Many of these kids want to go abroad and study and work, but in order for them to do something professional abroad, they must go back to school and pay more money so that way the foreign country company will know they actually know the work.

Oh you're a teacher! How do you know when your kids are cheating? I am the perfectionist over achiever but sadly the one that has a bad habit with not being able to say no, and a huge heart. Also I was pressured into it and couldn't back my way out of it, so now I'm just upset. But my class ends in 2 days, and I know when that final comes, I won't be the one retaking the class.

When exams take place, I have a seating chart and compare if I have any doubts. And if a student has anything on their desk other than two pens. I do try to make it very difficult for them to cheat, and abide by very strict rules. For example, if there is ANY talking, whoever is talking gets zeros n the exam.

I had a student once who memorised an essay by a former student, and were shocked that I could remember the name of the student, and could present a copy of the former essay.

I find it very easy to say no to my students if I know it is in their best interest.

It does bother me, but it seems necessary in the work totem pole.

It bothers me when people cheat, but eventually they get caught, or are in a position where they are unable to do the work because they aren't qualified. Better hope you don't have a physician who cheated, or the lawyer who did! It's a shame, the effort they put into cheating could be better spent actually doing it themselves.

The more interesting phenomenon is teachers that cheat FOR their students on standardized tests. Its rampant, teachers in NJ, DC, GA and other locations have been caught correcting kids scores to make themselves look good.

Now if you are a teacher - how do you tell kids not to cheat - with a straight face? The reputation of teachers is seriously damaged by this all too common occurrence.

In the interest of full disclosure my wife is a teacher turned administrator.

I work hard and expect others to play by the same rules. Although, sadly, not everyone feels the same.

I'm thinking of this in terms of my school work, and this certainly bothers me. Whether it's an "A", "F", or anything in between, what I got is what I earned, and I stand by that. I have failed tests when another student was right there to glance at but I simply won't be that type of person.
Mind you, my self worth is just a wee bit wrapped up in my academic status, so my studies are very personal to me.

Don't feel bad. I get it, you want to be friendly and help people out. Maybe they gave you some sob story about they had 100 kids and 500 full time jobs and you felt bad and tried to help by doing the work for them. I know I've done it in high school when I was young and dumb (I still might be a bit young and dumb still, ehehe)

But it is not fair that everyone else has to do the work, you have to do more work and one person gets to do no work.

It can be hard to say 'no' to people, but saying 'no' to people is a really great feeling. One of the first words you learn is 'no' but it never works because you depend on your parents. Gotta embrace saying no and doing things that are hard. It's cool, it's all a part of living and learning.

It's quite annoying when people cheat.. Especially when I have to work my hardest and do things my own then there's someone who doesn't do their own work.

Depends on the situation. I have copied my share of homework questions. But cheating at work or in marriage is not acceptable.

I have let people copy off me for a test, but hate when people do. I prefer to teach them beforehand about the things they are having difficulty with.

Cheating and lying are my two big "no, no's". I cannot tolerate that.

Letting them cheat on a test seems to be allowing them to get credit for what they don't know. It is no favor to them in the long run. If they cheat their way into medical school, do you really want that doctor writing you a prescription , when he/she was failing in chemistry and biology, but cheated their way to a passing grade? How would you feel then, about the person who helped them cheat by allowing them to see their paper? Just asking.

Sadly, I don't think they "eventually get caught". I think they just get better at it.

I have been done this way and watched key people take credit for my work, suggestions or ideas. It sucks and I really hate it because it demeans my natural desire to jump in and help out. Unscrupulous people exist even in Utopia. It's human nature after all.
